Power Problem Can't Post

I am having a problem with my Canon XL-1.
Today when I powered up the camcorder, the power LED came on for a few seconds then wend dark. I noticed the viewfinder remainded dark when turned the camera on as if the lens cap was on then the camera would shut down again.

At first I suspected the battery was low so I tried another battery. The results were the same. The same thing happens using AC. What puzzles me most is that when I switch to the VCR mode the XL-1 behaves normally. It playes tapes flawlessly.

Any ideas?
This is an XL-1 manufacured in May 1998

I might be totally off, but I had a somewhat similar problem and the story was that the cable from the viewfinder to the body was loose.
Maybe....

I am tending now to think that it has something to do with the standby mode.
