Question for Bob Hudson... Can't Post

Hey Bob,
I have been monitoring this forum for awhile and you seem to really know your stuff. What are your thoughts regarding Canon cameras and the way in which they record audio. Any truth to the story that they record audio at a slightly different sample rate than other brands? Thanks in advance for your input.

Early Canon's at least did record audio at a slightly higher rate. Here's what Adam Wilt has writtenc about this:

Randy Ubillos, lead engineer on Final Cut Pro... has found that while most DV cameras are pretty good, Canon cameras grab 48kHz sound at around 48.009 kHz, which can result in almost a second of video/audio slippage over the course of an hour (or around one frame every two minutes). Sonys, by contrast, seem to average 48.001 or 48.0005 kHz, resulting in perhaps a couple of frames of slippage over the same time period

FCP has actually had some different options to check for Canon users and there have been many reports over the years of problems when playing Canon tapes in other brands of camcorders and vice-versa.

I don't know if Canon still uses that same audio sampling rate. They used a slightly off-kilter Firewire implementation on their camcorders that caused problems for some people when trying to capture from a Canon camcorder to a Firewire drive.

I love my GL1, but honestly I would probably not buy another one (well maybe if they come out with a GL3 with 720P HDV and XLR audio.... :)
