Re: capture from vhs to computer w/XL1s Can't Post

I have the XL1s. I've seen the XL1s used as an A/D converter to convert analog
vhs directly into a mac laptop g4 running final cut pro. I can't remember how
this was done.
Here's my set up...
powerbook g4, XL1s, final cut pro v4.
Here are the connections...
- firewire from the computer to the XL1s,
- analog cables from XL1s to vhs deck.
Hint...
When the computer is not on, the XL1s recognizes the vhs deck as the input
and the vhs tape can be monitored in the XL1s viewfinder.
In this situation, LINE can be selected for AUDIO1 IN from the XL1s VCR Setup
menu.
However, when the computer is then turned on, the XL1s recognizes the
computer as the incoming source. 'DV IN' appears in the XL1s screen.
In this situation, LINE CAN NOT be selected for AUDIO1 IN from the XL1s VCR
Setup menu. Three dashes appear instead.
How can I use the XL1s as the pass through a/d converter (which I've seen
done) to move vhs directly into the computer?
Thanks,
David

I would like to know how to do this aswell.
The manual does not cover it and I see no way to do it,
You can output from a computer to the XL1s via firewire and to the analog outputs without going to tape , but I dunno about the other way.

Re: capture from vhs to computer w/XL1s [In reply to] Can't Post

I've seen it done with my own eyes, but I was not familiar enough with the
process and software to remember how it was done. It did not seem difficult.
I've seen this same question asked on many different forums over and over
again. Once we find the answer, we should ask that it be posted to a FAQ.

Re: capture from vhs to computer w/XL1s (audio/yes, video/no) [In reply to] Can't Post

I wish to report some progress.
I am now able to capture the audio, but still no video.
This progress was made by implementing Don Berube's suggestion that the
XL1s should be in:
camera mode, not vcr mode!
I have tried it with a tape in and a tape out with no difference.
I also tried various camera mode presets (idiot, auto, tv, av, m) with no joy.
Everything else is as I described in the initial posting, and after checking all
Don's suggestions against my setup.
So if you are an XL1s owner trying to do the same thing, amend my initial setup
to include setting the XL1s to cam mode instead of vcr mode.

Thanks,
David Sadler

Re: capture from vhs to computer w/XL1s [In reply to] Can't Post

David,
I have never seen the XL1S act as a pass-through A/D converter.
What I have seen it do is record an analog signal to MiniDV tape. Here's how to do it:
1) Plug in your RCA cables from the VCR
2) Switch the camera to VCR mode
3) Make sure the Firewire cable is NOT plugged in
4) Make sure the Audio 1/Mic switch is set to Audio 1
5) With a tape inserted, press the 'REC/II' button on the top of the camera - the big
red buttons for recording in Camera mode do not work
At this point the blue screen will turn black (unless a signal is passing through).
6) Press the play/pause button to begin recording to tape.
Regards,
- Luke
