Reliability of Canon Service? Can't Post

It is finally time for my trusty GL1 to make a visit to Canaon for routine
servicing. Can anyone attest to the overall quality of Canon's west coast
service center? For example, will they carefully address my camera's problems
and provide a comprehensive report on repairs made, or will it just be a
conveyor belt thing with no explanation?

I don't know about the west coast but I thought I would mention this anyway. I sent an xl1s to Toronto Canada and they addressed each item of complaint.Repairing a focus problem(adjusted back focus setting) and a recorder dirty head warning (replaced the whole recorder) they didn't repair the motor noise I get in the on camera mic (I usually don't use it anyway)but they did try to explain it and mentioned the optional mount.Turn around was 1 week. I was very happy with their service and I hope other Canon centers are equally satisfying.

Re: Reliability of Canon Service? [In reply to] Can't Post

i've had GL into canon because the LCD pull out sometimes didn't work. i asked them to check out everything on the camera as camera would be going out of warranty- even mentioned check for HOT Pixels ... the LCD was faulty relay switch. within a week of return it started doing it again. had to send it back 3 times before it was fixed correctly.
2 months later i noticed a HOT pixel. i then looked at older tapes and found the hot pixel went back 8 months. it would only show up after the camera had been on for 45min. sent camera into canon with a copy of my NOTE for LCD repair stating to check for hot pixels. canon states the tech never made a note about hot pixels so it must not of had any. i sent some old tapes in but they state date on camera could have been changed so tape could have been made anytime. i then found a tape that had some magazines and newspapers that clearly showed the dates and the tape had the hot pixel.. they were silent. they would "look into it" 2 months went by and they were still looking into it .. lucky i found that i had taken out extended warranty and they paid for it to be fixed at canon.
that was 1 1/2 year ago. just was viewing a tape that was shot in december and noticed 2 hot pixels - again it doesn't show up till the camera been ON for 45-60 min ...
sent in my elura becuase any tape recorded on it does not play back correct in other camera's or decks. the audio breaks up.
canon put the camera to "spec's doesn't say what adjustments they made.. still doesn't play in any other camera/deck but canon states it is within spec.
canon repairs come with either 60 or 90 day warranty if i remember correctly .. so check out their work very carefully.
and that 60-90 days is from the 1st repair date not any re-repairing they had to do within their 90 day warranty

Are the "Hot Pixels" actually recorded on the tape or do they just show up on the LCD display? Do they show up on video that is captured to your computer?

they are recorded to tape ..
yes they show up on clips captured to computer.
once you see it - that's 40% of what you see while watching a clip..my eye always goes to it ... now when others view it very few see it but once i point it out they too see it much larger then before i pointed it out.
