Shooting Bright (Outside) Light With XL1 Can't Post

Shot some stuff outside with XL1, ND filter on - but some of what I shot was still sort of blown out - I used zebra to try and control for over exposure - Any suggestions for shooting outside, bright light....filters, etc.....??

I used zebra to try and control for over exposure

Did you just turn on the zebras or did you try to adjust the iris according to the zebras? Also try shooting everything in manual mode. Sometimes auto will try to overrun the manual settings or it will just get confused.
If you still have a problem set your settings according to the subject ie brides face and hope for the best.

Yes, I adjusted iris as needed to eliminate zebra - Will experiment with all manual settings, compare results....thanks....

Shooting outside can result in very high contrast situations.Video can handle only a limited ratio. So you have to either .... add light for fill via lights or bounce or move the subject if possible to lower contrast lighting( shaded area) or wait until its cloudy or lastly expose for the important parts eg.faces and let what ever will be to be.

Even with the ND filter on i find shooting anythig other than manual with my XL1s something of a challenge on a bright sunny day at high altitude.

I believe the built-in ND is rated a 4X, but anyone who knows for sure please correct me. An additional ND filter (or a polarizer) attached to the front of the lens will help, particularly if you want the short depth of field of a wide aperture.

However, if you really want to have the utmost in flexibility (and don't mind the expense), get two identical polarizing filters. Attach one to the lens and secure the outer adjustment ring with tape so it doesn't move. Attach the other filter to the lens and you can control the amount of light passing through the lens to the point of allowing no light at all. I would often do this in 35mm photography when I wanted super long time exposures in bright daylight.
