Sound Devices Mixpre Field Mixer and XL1 Can't Post

Anyone out there using mixpre portable mixer with XL1? I'm experimenting with connections, attenuated cable into xlr adapter, and cabled into rca inputs (Sound Devices advised method for least noise).
My question is what works best for you?

I use an XL1s, but the following opinions should apply to the XL1 as well.
1). Signal strength coming from any mixer will stronger than that coming directly from a microphone. You will have to achieve a balance between the gain control on the camera, the master out of the mixer, and finally the gain control of the individual channel on the mixer.
2) Check the signal strength of the main out of the mixer. If it is +4db(high), set the camera to line. If it is low (which could be anywhere from -10db to -40db), set the camera to attenuate, which is -35db.
3) Finally, watch your audio meter carefully. You will recording digitally, shich means there is no headroom to manage distortion.

'Signal strength coming from any mixer will stronger than that coming directly from a microphone'

Some mixers are "passive" and may actually reduce the level. The mixers do not have batteries or other power supply.
