Time to Replace? Can't Post

I ' ve had my XL-1 since 1998. It's been through a lot. Lately it's behaving like a grumpy old man. The DV port is very fussy about how I connect the cable.
Sometimes the only way I can get the tape to play is from the XL-1.

More recently, the viewfinder died on me. It makes me wonder what could go next. I'm not so sure Canon would even try to fix it. A couple of years ago I sent in my Canon L-1 Hi8, they said they don't work on cameras that are 7 years old.

Which leads me to think I need to start looking for a replacement.

Any Ideas?

Well, this is a really GOOD predicament you find yourself in.
Everyone always wants a new camera but can rarely justify getting one. You, at least, have a legit reason to start shopping.

I have an FX1 that I only started using but have yet to try in a wedding event. I like it OK but it's hard for me to get used to the controls (lack of intuitive manual controls like the XL1S) and there's no good way to hold it. It's lighter than the XL1 at only 4.5lbs compared to the XL1's 6.5lbs, but it feels heavier because it has to be held in front of your body all day long as opposed to on your shoulders like the XL1/XL1S.

I, for one, would consider the XL2 as a replacement for my XL1S if I were in your shoes. I've tried one out and it's very sweet. There is no backfocus problem like there is on my XL1S. It also has all the different frame rates, 24p, 30i, 60i etc. It shoots true 16:9, has the 20x zoom, and looks super cool.
But then, I already have an HDV cam so I'm not considering that as a variable. If you're thinking HDV then you have a whole slew of other cams to consider.

My vote: XL2.

Andrew's right that along with the problem is an opportunity.

I've shot with the XL-2 also and it is indeed quite nice. If your budget is more limited the GL-2 is also an option if you don't think you'd use all the goodies the XL-2 offers (frame rates, 16:9, etc.)

Hold off at least a month if possible, you just never know what will pop up at NAB...

Thanks for the response so far.

I don't have time to wait for anything rolling off the line at NAB.
I like the GL-2 but....
The GL-2s at our local cable channel have not stood up. All three are out of commission with vary ailments.

Money is a big concern. What are the chances of getting used XL-1 or XL-2 in perfect condition? Not dropped or worked heavily as a player?

I had luck on Ebay with my purchases, GL2-$1000, Gl2-$1250, Xl1s-$1750. Current average on ebay is Gl2's $1450-$1600, Xl1's $1400-$1700 and Xl1s's $1600-$1900. I still check daily never knowing if I'll catch another bargain.
Good luck

The likelihood of getting an XL-1 or XL-1S in perfect condition isn't that good, they've been out quite a while and tend to be workhorses.

The liklihood of getting an XL-2 in perfect condition is very good, the downside is that they usually call that "new".

I have three GL-2s, the newest is 2 years old. All are in great operating order, but we treat them with respect. "Shared, not owned" cams are typically a lot less reliable for some odd reason, and the reliability tends to go down as the number of bozos using them goes up.
