What's the purpose of a matte box? Can't Post

I understand matte boxes hold filters, but then so do screw on rings. I understand that matte boxes might prevent vignetting, but they seem to only hold up to three filters, which shouldn't vignette anyways (except on wide angle, I suppose). I understand that they might block outside light, but so does a sunshade.
So why are they so great? They seem awfully expensive. Is it just a holdover from film?

Well, they are useful because they hold filters, and they shade the lens from flare, and they are adjustable to your lens and shooting conditions. All in one.
Also, they look really dang cool on an XL1. You show up with a good box, and they know you mean business.
Also, there is not a lot of demand for them from the consumer area.... so only pros use them... and pros pay the price.
