XH-A1: Take Care of that LCD Panel (Uggh!!)

I set my Glidecam 4000 Pro down on the floor next to my editing bay, standing upright, with the A1 mounted and LCD screen out. Like an idiot, I swiveled around in my chair, forgetting the camera was there, and the Glidecam tipped over, sending my A1 to the floor. The LCD panel took the hit. I kind of muttered something like "oops" under my breath, thinking that I probably didn't do any harm to the camera. The distance from atop an upright Glidecam to the floor is only a couple of feet, and it fell to a plush carpeted floor. Well, I go to power on the camera a few minutes later to find the LCD screen all whacked out. It had this nickel-sized black blotch at the bottom-center of the screen, with three or four little vein-like lines protruding from the blotch outward to the edges of the screen in several directions. Other than the LCD, the camera seems to operate just fine. This was about a month ago. A few days ago, I finally got around to sending the camera into Canon ($42 Fed Ex Express Saver 3-day rate). Yesterday I got an email from Canon with a repair quote. They want $500 to replace the LCD panel! I'm still sick thinking about it. I know some of you might consider something like this just another cost of running a video business, but for a guy who, in his second year in business is struggling just to be able to write himself a paycheck once in awhile, IT STINGS...BAD! Moral of the story: Take care of your cameras, don't leave them mounted to your glidecam unattended, and flip your LCD screen in when not in use. Dave
