XL-1 recording with second mic Can't Post

Hey everyone,
I can't get 12 bit 4 channel audio recording to work on my XL-1.
Here's what I'm doing.
1. In the menu located on the side of the XL-1, I selected MENU and then selected AUDIO MODE 12bit ST 1,2.
2. In the MENU, I then went to AUDIO 2 IN and selected MIC.
3. The viewfinder now shows, STEREO 12 bit ST-1, 2
4. I have both REC LEVELS set to A (automatic) located behind the door on the side of the XL-1.
5. I have the switch for AUDIO 1/MIC set to MIC.
6. I am using the onboard XL-1 mic and I have also plugged a mic into the RCA Audio 1 jacks in the back of the XL-1.
7. I can only hear audio from the onboard XL-1 supplied mic. If I switch the AUDIO 1/MIC selection to AUDIO 1, I can then hear the second mic to confirm that the mic is actually operational.
Shouldn't I be able to hear audio from both mics simultaneously?
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt press the monitor button when recording or playback to toggle from ST1 ST2 or a mix of both.

Graham.
Thanks for the tip. I will try it tonight.
BTW, if I select the "mix" setting, will I be able to hear both channels simultaneously while recording?
Also, does it matter what setting the "monitor" butten is set to while recording? That is, will both Audio 1 and Audio 2 record to tape regardless of the monitor setting?
Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt the Audio 1&2 setting with the monitor button will allow you to monitor both channels simultaneously. The setting has no effect with recording.

Thanks again Graham.
Once I get the XL-1 to record both stereo channels I will just have to figure out how to get them both downloaded separately through my DV300 onto my computer. I know there is a check box in the DVTools for Channel 1 and Channel 2 audio so I hope it will be easy.
Wish me luck.

My XL-1 must be broken.
I tried using the "Audio Monitor" button while I had 12bit ST-1,2 selected but could only hear audio from the on-board mic. I selected ST-1 and could hear the on-board mic, I selected ST-2 and could hear nothing, I selected MIX and could only hear the on-board mic. If I selected 16bit audio and then switched the "Audio 1/MIC" to "Audio 1" I could hear using the mic attached to the RCA inputs on the back of the handle. I did this to confirm that the RCA inputs were functional.
I guess I will be sending my camcorder to Canon for repair. Bummer.

Sounds like you are plugged into the wrong jacks for audio 2. Use the RCA jacks in the side of the handle (labeled audio 2) for input (or analog output), not the ones on the back next to the S-VIDEO/composit jacks. The RCA jacks on the back are for audio 1, not audio 2.

Boy do I feel stupid.
Thanks Don, I was hooking up the audio 2 at the wrong location. Must be all the fog we are experiencing in Santa Barbara...it has gone to my brain.
Thanks for the help.

Thought the marine layer burned off by around noon! Or is this evening fog? I recall a real evening FOG in the Port Hueneme area one December a number of year ago, literally could not see 20' in front of the car.

I am pretty new to my XL1 but a friend of mine told me that you can't get both mics to work simultaneously. I have a xlr adapter that plugs into the audio 1 rca plugs and Ican either here my onboard shotgun or whatever mic I have hooked to the xlr. That's all I can tell you. Maybe contact Canon personally.
Good Luck
Rob

Re: XL-1 recording with second mic-CORRECT ANSWER [In reply to] Can't Post

The below posts are not correct...you can not record on both channels on the XL1 at the same time. You must choose one or the other. Unlike a professional camera the XL1 records L/R to the SAME part of the tape. The claim by Canon that you can record in 4 channels is an exaggeration (Actually you have 2 channels of stereo. However the second channel is acutally recoding on a data line of the tape (not used by comsumer cameras)...not on an audio line. With a professional camera you can record what they call Line 1 and Line 2 at the same time (its essentially L and R if you were to record/mix stereo). Your only and easy option is a small camera mounted mixer. That will solve your problem. Then you could record both mics on one channel and then YOU control the mix. Email me if you have more questions...
