XL1/FCP capture problems Can't Post

I can't seem to get my Final Cut Pro and XL-1 to communicate in log and capture at all. My setup is as follows:

Canon XL-1
Mac iBook G4
Final Cut Pro 4

When I open the log and capture there is a black screen and no controls for the deck. The firewire device is listed as "missing."

I have heard about problems between the Canon XL-1 and Final Cut Pro with regards to capture, but have been unable to find anything online that specifically addresses the problem I have. I just got the XL-1 and have yet to sucessfully capture so maybe it's just a matter of settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: [jpettit] XL1/FCP capture problems [In reply to] Can't Post

There are lots of "problems" stories around relating to FCP and various cameras, most of which should be re-labeled "Camera problems in the FCP environment" or "User issues with cam and FCP". A lot of people have used this cam/NLE combo over the years with great results, so there's no fundamental problem.

The "missing" statement means that FCP can't see the cam, so to start, make sure that the problem isn't in the XL-1. I've seen several posts in the last few months about failed FW ports on the camera, which isn't surprising since this is aging gear. Hook everything up and then open System Profiler in OS X and check what it shows as being attached to the FW ports. If you can't find your XL-1 there, then either the cable is bad, or the cam or FW port has a problem.

If the cam shows in system profiler, then there are several possibilities within FCP. Trashing your prefs, running MacJanitor, and repairing permissions are always a good idea when starting a new project. Next, verify that your capture presets are correctly set, then open Log and Capture. I have also experienced FW "quits" on a couple of ocassions that were remedied by shutting down the FW devices and re-starting them. This isn't really an FCP problem IMO since it can be fixed without quitting FCP.

If you still can't at least get "communication with VTR", post more specifics of your Mac, OS level version, FCP version, and any error statements you see and we can dig deeper. You can also try capturing with a deck or different cam.
