XL1 Can't Post

I am looking for a semi-professional camcorder for filming sport events and action such as snowboarding which i will use with pc editing(firewire). I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? I am looking for something aimed less toward the average consumer or home movie maker but also not to complicated and under 3 grand.

Check out the Sony vx2000. Very good camera! You can get it from B&H for $2300.

Also, which camcorder is most flexible in terms of lense attachments and add-ons? I want to purchase a fisheye lense for which ever camcorder i end up buying.

XL1S, GL2, VX2000 [In reply to] Can't Post

Both the VX2K and GL2 are roughly similar cams. They can take pretty much the same lens accessories. The big difference is the way they shoot (Canon more orange[warm], Sony more blue[cool]). The secondary issue is that the Canon can shoot 30 fps in frame movie (aka progressive scan), while the Sony cannot (except if you want to go PAL instead of NTSC, PAL version can shoot 24 FPS progressive scan).
The GL2 also has 4 track audio option (at slightly reduced audio resolution). In 2 track, both cams have equivalent audio resolution.
It will be pretty difficult to get XL-1S for under $3K. You can read more about this at http://www.dvinfo.net

So what do u think i should use? I am going o be filming alot of snowboarding which is the main reason i am upgrading from my current consumer grade camcorder but i also dont want to be limited just to filming that, i also want to be able to film just regular things in both light and some what dark.

The gl2 and sony vx2000 are much more compact. They also have LCD sreens, which the XL1 does not. The vx2000 is more durable in its construction than the gl2. If I were you, I would go for the sony vx2000.

Almost anything will do... [In reply to] Can't Post

The big secret about 3 chippers is that they are all pretty good. The best advice is to try before you buy. However, if you have never used one, trying does not always help you in your selection.
Except for the new Panasonic DVX100, the GL2 is probably the marginally best of the crop. Tht does not mean it is a dog, but rather they are all so good, the GL only looks slightly better.
The big reason for saying this is that many of the skateboarders, etc. like the smaller, lighter cams cams. Still it is pretty hard to say if that is the best for you.
I have the old XL-1, which is still an excellent cam that I think I will keep for at least another year. The I will either upgrade to an XL-1S or whatever upgraded system they have then.
For now, I think you should cruise the 'net more.

The XL1 is far more flexible, but is substantially larger. The GL1 and VX2000 are about equally flexible, and both can work with wideangle and fisheye adapters. The GL2 is a bit lower cost
The GL1 (model before the GL2) was very popular with skateboarding shooters.

Finally, what is the size of the lense adapter that i would have to use with either the Sony VX or the GL2? By this i mean this size in mm. of the lense for instance 37mm so that i could buy a 37mm fisheye lense to put onto the camcorder.(ex.)
