XL1 and Premiere 5.5 capture question Can't Post

I'm asking this for my buddy who got his hands on an XL1 and was trying to bring footage into Premiere 5.5. He can get the file on the computer from the camera and view it in MediaPlayer, but can't view or edit it in Premiere. Any suggestions on the proper settings to be able view and edit the footage in Premiere would be greatly appreciated. ps- the files are coming over as avi files, Premiere plays other avi files with no problems, but says that it does not have the proper compression when trying to open one of the files from the camera. Thanx in advance for all help.
