XL1 auto focus Can't Post

I'm planning on buying a camcorder and am considering the canon XL1. I've only heard great reviews on it, and I hope it's as good as it sounds. The only problem that many people have mentioned, is the auto focus. They say the auto focus is a bit slow and hunts to find the right focus. I need a good auto focus, especially because I'll be filming skateboarders, and won't always have the time to find the right focus manually. Is the XL1 auto focus a big problem or is it just a tiny mistake that would be hard to notice? Should I consider the sony vx2000? (I hear it has a much better auto focus) Thanks for your help.

Re: XL1 auto focus Can't Post

I do use the autofocus very much. Since I haven't tried the VX2000 I cannot comment on how well the Sony system functions.
The problem with most autofocus systems (and I feel sure that this is true for the VX2000 too) is that the cams may change the focus exactly when you do not want them to. Instead (on the XL-1) the technique is to leave the cam in manual focus and touch the focus button on the side of the lens. Any corrections can be done by rolling the focus ring on the lens barrel (its easier than it sounds).
The complaint with the XL-1 is that the EVF (viewfinder) is not the best tool to judge focus with since its resolution is not that high. That is more or less true statement. Still in practical terms, where you are shooting subjects in a wide shot with a large depth-of-field, focus will not change much.
Anyway, a number of people are taking skateboarding videos. Findout the reasons why they are using them as it may prove why they chose the Sony. Also, you may want to check out the Sony PD150 which costs about what the XL-1 does.
Also I recommend checking our Chris Hurd XL-1 Watchdog pages at http://www.dvinfo.net
