XL1 exposure question Can't Post

This may be a really dumb question and I searched the previous posts...
My XL1 is recording very dark. White balance seems to be okay and I have tried doing manual settings with a lower shutter speed 1/30, 1/15 and all other recording settings.

Still getting a very dim, gray recording.

Any thoughts??

What are you recording?
Describe the lighting in detail?
What are all the camcorder settings that you are using?
Is it still dark in "green box" recording mode?

We are at a school. Most of our indoor recording is happening in white flourescent lighting. I have been in our gym which is extremely well lit and can't get a good image quality.

I have just established myself as the dumbest person on the board. The ND filter WAS on. I don't know how I could have missed it...

thanks for your help!
