XL1 vs XM1 Can't Post

hepi!
now i'm planning a purchase of a dv-cam, and the options have been narrowed down. now i i've read endless comparisons XL1 vs VX2000, but how about XL1 vs XM1?
what are the pros and cons? (gonna use it for moviemaking)
see i've found an XM1 $1500 bucks cheaper than the XL, so im wondering what really differs the two?
is the picture quality much worse in the XM1 or what is it?
thanksthanks in advance

This is compared to the NTSC GL1, similar to the PAL XM1. XL1 is a more prefessional product. Much better control over the shooting situation, especially audio. You have manual level controls, 4-channel recording, UV metering, better standard mic, to name a few items. Has several lens options, including manual lens options that give fine control, focus pulling, etc. A true B&W crt viewfinder option. It uses 1/3" CCD for somewhat better control of depth of field and a somewhat cleaner image. It is a larger package. The XL1 supports shutter speeds of 1/30, 1/15 adn 1/8 ot found on the GL1.
The GL1 is smaller, lighter weight, a longer zoom ratio on the basic lens, and lower cost lens adapters and filters (58mm filter thread vs. 72mm on the XL1). It has an LCD panel and some additional image adjustment from the menu system. It has a 1/4" CCD.
The images are closely matched and intercut well, although the standard XL1 image maybe a bit softer - good for human faces. I prefer to shoot with the XL1.
No doubt others will offer their comments, and someone may have some PAL-specific comments..
Rumors are that both models are due for an update later this year.

Re: XL1 vs XM1 [In reply to] Can't Post

XM1 is PAL version on GL-1.
The big reasons for the difference in price between the XL-1 and XM-1 are:
optics
image control
audio
options
Absolutely the most dramatic difference bewteen the cams is audio. There is full audio control on all 4 channels, plus the best stock mic on any of these sub $5,000 camcorders. AGC works well, but having manual control is a real plus. XM-1 lacks this.
Image control is also very good on the XL-1. You do have to be a little careful when hand holding the cam because you may rotate the apeture wheel. When you get use to it, I doubt you will have problems with it.
Nice lens on XL, and of course you have other lens options if you want them. Some like the cam with the 14X manual lens, or 3X wide angle lens.
There is also a B/W hires viewfinder available, but it cost would cover a 14X or 3x lens with enough change for another battery.
