For weddings the GY-DV5000U is going to be your better choice UNLESS you have plans to start shooting them at 24P (and if you are, then'd I recommend the DVX100a). With larger DVCAM tape you'll have less chances of tape dropout and certainly weddings are one of those places where reliability is paramount (brides hate doing second takes of the "I does" don't they).

Bob,
Would you say your recommendation may be a bit premature...given the XL2 isn't even out yet? The JVC 5000 doesn't quite have the stellar reliability I would feel comfortable with....Lets see what the XL2 can produce first.....

Is this the Mark Foley, late of the now emasculated Videography magazine?

I have not seen any negative reports on the DV5000 (and I have looked for them). Do you have some specifics?

No I'm not....I had a 5000 and had nothing but endless problems from bad tape transport...horrible audio capture...etc....took forever to get repaired. Now I'm dealing with another JVC (VS-30U deck) product that is also very problematic. I'm not to happy with anything with a JVC label anymore :-)

I must say that JVC has always been last on my list the the four major DV camcorder makers: Sony, Canon, Panasonic, JVC (Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi, etc. just don't count at all Angelic )

Just from the specs, the XL2 looks a little weak and a lot of that may have to do with the standard lens: it offers poor low light specs and it is not wide enough for professional use. I think Canon thought the 2-X telephoto looks impressive to amateurs, but in real life that's not something most of us will use.

Probably for weddings the PD170 may still be one of the best bets.

Re: [Bob Hudson] XL2/JVC5000 [In reply to] Can't Post

The XL2 low light rating is 5.5 lux at 1/60 which translates to 0.7 lux at 1/8 shutter.
As a point of reference, the XL1s rating was 2 lux at 1/8 shutter.
However, not clear what the other parameters for this sensitivity rating were such as gain setting and IRE from a white card.

The PD170 is a nice camcorder for weddings, a bit more compact than the XL1/2 series. But one really neededs to try the XL2 in a reasonable working-like environment before making pronouncements. A lot of weddings have been successfully shot with the XL1 and XL1s.

Hey GUYS, I'm trying to find out if the XL2 is good or not, I assume that is better than the XL1 because is newer and improbed...I like 24p for production (not wedding), so I need to compare it with the DvX100a right?

Bob looks like you don't like XL2!

So what are the PROS and CONs between this 2 babies!
thnks for Ur help

"Bob looks like you don't like XL2!"

Unless you can afford to buy additional lenses in order to take advantage of the ability to change lenses, then I still think the DVX100A is a better deal.

However, the XL2 has some real pluses and I would say that perhaps the verdict is not quite in. Here's a real good site for comparing the two: http://www.DVXuser.com/...splay;num=1097479682
