XLR adaptor Can't Post

I've had my XL-1 for about 8 months, and i'm thinking about upgrading my sound by purchasing an XLR adaptor. Is it best to purchase one from beachtek or studio one, or is the canon shoulder mount/xlr worth the money? Any help on this decision would be most appreciated.

IMHO the Canon MA-100 is worth the money. It is lower cost than the Beachtek or Studio 1, although it does not offer the level control pots, you do not need them with the XL1. And it improves camera handling plus adds a nice place to mount a wireless mic receiver.
The XL1 watchdog at http://www.dvinfo.net has some reviews comments about it.

The MA-100 is my choice. I have a Beachtek box that I use on another camera and it is an excellent product, but for the XL1 I like the MA-100. It has an adjustable shoulder pad so you can fit it comfortably on your shoulder. I will often times put the MA-100 on the XL1 and not connect the cables when I need to shoot freehand. The MA-100 puts some weight on the back of the XL1 which helps balance the camera since it is slightly nose heavy. The only feature I wish the MA-100 would have is adjustable levels for each XLR connector. I will sometimes connect two different microphones to the MA-100 and could use individual level control. That being said, the MA-100 is a great addition to the XL1. It is a great place to mount a wirelesss receiver. I use Azden's receiver and it is very large, but fits perfectly on the MA-100. Shop around for the best price. I purchased mine at Cameraworld.com for under $200. B&H had them for over $300 during the same period of time.

Thanks guys. I think i'll be purchasing the Canon adaptor when I get some money again. Now I suppose i'll have to start thinking of what mic's to get. That's just a whole new can of worms just waiting to burst open!

Microphone [In reply to] Can't Post

O.k.-- I've decided to get the MA 100 for my XL, now i'm just trying to figure out which microphone to buy. I'm primarily looking for a shotgun, and i've done some research on the Senn. MKE-300 and ME-66. From the reviews i've read, both of these mics seem to be great. Which do you guys prefer? Thanks in advance!

As a mater of amplification, it depends on where the MA-100 is connected. The XL1 provides audio level controls. If the MA-100 is connected to the Audio 1 inputs you have Stereo level and balance controls. (Not optimal perhaps, but it works.) If connected to Audio 2 you have individual level controls for each channel.

The MKE300 has a mono 3.5mm mini phone plug output, not suitable for use with the MA-100. (It has a high output level and can plug into the XL1's mic input jack but will record only on the left channel if you do not use a mono-to-stereo adapter.) It is a modest priced shotgun designed for the higher end consumer market.
I believe that you will find the ME-66 to be a far better mic for serious use.
