Philip, an exciting day today - I took delivery of my A1. Going through the manual now - I thought they might have provided an instructional DVD!

As you say, filming under controlled lighting shouldn't be too hard. Certainly there are lots of bells and whistles.

Ahh....the fun begins now. THere is an instructional DVD available for the A1 from VASST. It is a good one and starts from the very basic functions. If you know much about prosumer type cameras you can pretty much figure it out with the manual and some fooling around.

The biggest thing is to flip the little AGC switch on the side to off immediately. That switch will screw you up big time if you ever encounter lighting less than idea. Just turn it off and leave it that way.

On www.dvinfo.net there is a forum dedicated to the Canon G1/A1. There is also a thread about custom presets on there. I recommend you read it and learn about them. There are a bunch of presets already created on there that may get you started. I have played around with them but have settled on a version of the most recent one called Trucolor. You can learn alot about all those custom settings via that thread. It is a great place to start. I don't want to give you presets right away cause if you spend the time and learn them you will be farther ahead in the long run. Play around a bit and learn what the cam is capable of. You will be impressed.

Keep an eye on that forum. You will learn about the quibbles and foibles of the camera as well as the strengths of it. In the right hands the cam is pretty awesome.

check this out.....some amazing shots from my Saturday wedding. www.frogmanproductions.com/video/DeSmetTrailer.wmv Nothing spectacular but some pretty imagery .

Thanks for the heads up on that Philip. I will check out those sources - and yes, immediately set the AGC switch to off.

I walked into a camera shop today with the camera in hand (so I could size it up for a bag) and the sales guy took one look at it and swooned. He said: "you've certainly made the right choice there". I explained that at the end of the day it had been a toss up between it and the Sony Z1 and he said there was little competition. A popular network TV show has been running in Australia: "So you think you can dance?" and he said the A1 was used for filming the dancing becuase of its light weight nature. It was a very slick production. So that means it's totally "broadcast quality" and completely versatile.

I owe this to you (and Jerome). Thanks again for taking the time out.

I am sure any couple would treasure those types of slide shows. A very nice total package of stills/audio/text - something to ponder on when the reality of life starts to sink in!! Smile
