Xl1 Gl1 widescreen question Can't Post

If I shoot in 16:9 mode and then spread it back out in post (eventually letterboxing it) with the intention of showing it on a NTSC tv, does this show more detail in the scene than if I shot in normal mode and simply cropped top and bottom (creating a letterbox effect)? Has anyone experimented with this?

My understanding is that in 16:9 mode, you are capturing the image at a lesser resolution and in fact, if you letterboxed a normal picture , you would end up with exactly the same resolution.
The only advantage I can see is that if you shoot in 16:9, your footage is able to played on actual widescreen TVs.

Do you know if there is some kind of lens adapter that could let in as much detail as possible then allow me to blow back out to 16:9? I believe this is how anamorphic lenses work but am not sure.

Yes anamorphic lenses do this but I dont know of any that fit the GL-1. I imagine they are pretty expensive too. If anyone can find a cheapish one Id be very interested too.

Just out of interest, if you shoot in 16:9, how would you make it (in post) so that when recorded back it will play letterboxed on a 4:3 TV?
