auto exposure Can't Post

I have 2 Xl1s and they both do the same thing, so I need to know what I'm doing wrong. when in manual mode, with the iris and shutter speed set, the exposure still changes. When I change the subject in front of the camera to a dramatically different clothing color, like white to black, it still auto adjusts. The meter in the viewfinder moves AND THE EXPOSURE CHANGES. I can not use exposure lock in manual mode. How do I keep it from changing.. I want TRUE MANUAL CONTROL BUT THE CAMERA SEEMS TO ALTER EXPOSURE ANY WAY... HELP!

Do you have the GAIN control in the "A" (AUTO) position, or at a setting (-3,0 6, 16?) If in A position, it will try to maintain image brightness per the camcorder's metering function.
