capturing question Can't Post

If I film with my xl1, will capturing with a 1-chip camera hurt the quality at all? Basically I wish to save the life of my camera by not using the heads as much, and i work at a pawn shop so I have access to numerous low end dv cameras and figured i could purchase one and use it in a sense like a mini dv deck. also, i have aspirations of purchasing a xl2 and shooting in 24p, im guessing you cannot capture using a regular camcorder if you want the computer to pick up the 24 fps? any advice or anything please let me know. thanks

This would work fine.Your capture software would treat it the same whether it be from the XL1 or a 1 chip cam or miniDV deck.No quality loss if the 1 chip is up to par.(Clean heads in good condition)

What they don’t tell you….is that you need to capture from your camera ( or another “CANON” professional deck) if you want your audio to stay in sync. Canon records audio at a slightly different sample rate than the competitors. At least this is what I have been told. I also shoot with a XL1S and had problems with audio sync when capturing with equipment other than my camera. After going back and capturing the same footage from the camera, my audio sync problems went away. Hope this helps.

If you want to do something like this, take a close look at the Canon XI (I hope I have the model designation right), a 1/3' single-chip camera that is supposed to produce amazing images.

Whether or not it blows the sox off other single chip cameras is open to question, but at $1500 US (last time I looked, a year or so ago) list, it had better be good!

In any case, it is my opinion that consistency within manufacturers makes post color correction easier. Take a look and post your thoughts.

yes I have heard good things about that camera, if it is the optura Xi you are referring to. My only problem is, I dont have the money for such a camera, if I did, I would probably go ahead and just purchase a deck. What I intend on doing is using my universities editing decks for the time being but search for a "camera only" canon deal. so if anyone reads this who has any canon dv camcorder (lower end of course) and wants to sell it, let me know! thanks again waldemar

GNS if you have an audio sync problem it is likely a software problem.Maybe inconsistant properties.eg. project set to 44k 16bit audio then loading miniDV 48k 16 bit. etc. I have capped with a number of decks and 1chippers (Sony,Panasonic,JVC,Canon) they all cap exactly identical files.

Smitty,
Thanks for your response. I had this problem awhile back and looked into it pretty extensively. I had all of the settings in the software set as they should be (i.e. sample rate and such). I then posed the question at forums such as these and I seemed to get the same response back from most of the experts..."that canon records audio at a slightly higher sample rate than other cameras and that I would have to capture with the camera or a really high end professional deck"......However, I am interested in your findings. What kind of camera are you shooting with and how do you capture?. What software are you using? How long are the clips you are capturing? I am using FCP 4 on a Powermac dual 1.25. It would be great to know if I could capture with something other than my camera......or an expensive high end deck...(I also want to save to heads on the camera). Anyway, thanks again for your input.

Re: [GNS] capturing question [In reply to] Can't Post

Most of my stuff I shoot with XL1S. I normally play back the tape with a Panasonic 1 chipper the firewire is connected to a Canopus ADVC100 to the computer.Capture software is normally either Vegas 5 or Ulead MSP
The computers (3) are 1/ pentium III 850 2/another PIII 850 or 3/ P4 3.2
Capture files are anything from a few seconds to a full hour shoot.
All Ihave ever done is cap the tape, load them into timeline( which the project is set for DV 48k 16bit) .Never a problem.
I also have delivered tapes to a variety of editors eg. TV for broadcast(they do use pro decks) ,co-op shoots (they have used JVC,Canon,Panasonic 1 chippers)
No one has ever had any out of sync.
The miniDV format is a standard and therefore would playback on any miniDV compliant cam/deck that is set to specs.
Now a problem can occur if either 1/ the cam/deck alignment is out 2/ your aquisition cam is out 3/ if you record in LP they become VERY fussy about alignment and don't suggest you use LP in this way.
All this said your computer and software should work as good as any other
Maybe we should run through a test ?
