Ok I cant wait any longer I need to buy a camera. Ive heard many things, one being that the gl1 has a better chip than the xl1. Can this be true. Another thing that I have heard is that sony is making better cameras then canon. all I really want to know is what is the "best" prosumer camera at the moment?...........thanks for any responce.....

No. The XL1 chip is better. The XL1 is better injust about all respects except it does not support recording from analog video input and, if important to your uses, it is bigger/heavier.(I oneof each own both).

The hot prosumer camcorder from Sony is the VX2000, which is in some respects better than the XL1 - and in other respects not as good. Which is better for you depends on what you want from a camcorder. The VX2000 is in most respects better that the GL1. It also is a much newer model than the XL1 or GL1.

I agree with Don on the XL-1 vs. Sony. One other thing to add is how much do you want to spend. There is always the other 'prosumer' cam, the JVC GY500 (or is DV500). It does a lot of things right too, but is definitely a more expensive cam.
The next thing to ask yourself is do you think you can use this cam? There is a lot of power in these camcorders, do you want to pay $3,600 ($4,000+ for the JVC) it takes to play? If you can get by with a cheaper cam (like the GLs, VXs, TRV900) why not save a few dollars?
