frame mode Can't Post

why would you not ALWAYS record in frame mode? Don't see much difference with the talk of movie look - so why not get the same look with a full frames? I've made some great 4x6 prints from these frames. Or is there some reason not to keep it in frame mode.

I do always record in frame mode and i urge anyone who is making DVD's to do the same. You do get a sort of "film look" but more importantly you get DVD's that will look a lot better on computer screens and other progressive scan monitors than does normal interlaced video.

Some people who say "oh there's a loss of resolution," but ultimate sharpness is not the goal of moving image capture and in fact DV video usually looks better when you reduce the edge sharpness a bit.

Others may have had experience with Sony's movie mode, which truly should be avoided. Canon has a much better system. Canon also has much better in-camera 16:9 mode than Sony.

And in re-readiong your post again: you do understand that "frame mode" IS not the "normal" mode, but is in fact the "film look" mode?

The main reason to not use frame mode is to avoid the effects on motion - sort of a strob effect, caused by the 1/30 time between refreshes of the image. The 1/60 refresh rate of normal mode (for NTSC) gives a smoother character to motion. Ultimately go with what looks best to you or paying client!

This has been my main reason for not shooting in frame mode. I've tried the setting while setting up shots and was disturbed by the jerkiness I saw in my viewfinder. I always switch back to 60i for the take. Seems like I am always shooting for clients. Rarely get a chance to shoot for myself. Someday...

What you see in the LCD does not necessarily reflect what it looks like on a TV. I have shot all sorts of material moving all sorts of speeds and the only problem I had was with airplane propellors and changing the shutter speed gave them back their normal motion.

Films of course are routinely shot with only 24 images per second so 3o images per second does not create any sort of motion the human eye is not used to, although it does create an additional incentive perhaps for not doing fast pans :)

yeah- these replies baffle me. Why don't you just up the shutter? You can do that in frame mode right?

Yes, you can change the shutter in frame mode: that's what I did with the airplane props. Beynd that I have never seen anything in frame mode that stodd out as having odd movement and the video shot in frame never fails to elicit comments about how nice it looks. Part of that is because it does not exactly look like plain old 60i camcorder video, which too often has the harshness of TV news and infomericals (both of which share the motto: "Our content is crap, but we have very sharp pictures!" :)

The best you can do with frame mode is to experiement, try it out. I had my GL1 for two years before I tried it because I though it was like the really bad movie mode on Sony camcorders.

Re: [Bob Hudson] frame mode [In reply to] Can't Post

Ha - reminds me of a funny thing that happened recently.

I was editing a video I shot at the local airport and noticed the film quality. At that point I looked at the video and said to myself 'Damn boy, you are getting better and better at shooting video'. I mean my shoulder had bruises from all the self-pats on the back.

Only later did I realize that I had experimented with FRAME mode a few nights before and left the camera with that setting enabled.

I learned three lessons there -

1) I really ain't that great.

2) Always check all your settings before your shoot, just in case you left something on or off that might be critical for the days shoot.

3) Frame mode does indeed take the 'harsh burn' image out of the video .... giving that softer film look.

Here are some still shots taken straight from the video - these are frame mode and 16:9 and there was zero processing done other than to save them as JPEG's: http://bobhudson.com/zoo/

Bob -

My birds are prettier than your birds (LOL) .. but your output is truly better using 16:9 and frame mode. Blush
These were from my very first location shoot and are stills taken straight from the video to JPG, no frame mode (didn't even know what that meant back then). Despite the still grabs shown, the video was much clearer and those fuzzy motion lines the stills show weren't readily visible. BTW - Love that last tiger shot on your site !! We had a tiger roaming our neighborhood recently, but the damned law shot her dead instead of waiting for the fish and game folk -Sketch

Yeah, last night I finished a video of my grandkids that had clips done last fall while I experimented with 24p. I kept thinking, wow! those images are so much nicer than what I've been shooting lately. Then I realized that they were 24p. I think I'm going back to it.

Sorry, been out of town on a shoot.

The birds stuff was shot using a GL2, auto everything on (I was new), standard mode.
