light for xl1? which to get Can't Post

I am about to start shooting bar/bat mitzfahs and parties of that nature and I know i will need a light due to the poor low light recording of the xl1. is the canon VL-10Li suitable for this type of a shoot or should i get something more powerful. if so, how many watts do i need or cna you recommend any specific lights to me? Also i am looking for the best yet least expensive xlr microphone adapter for this same type of shoot, any suggestions on that? thanks

I use a mini-cool micro, which puts out a LOT of concentrated light. The light is many years old and probably puts out far more than is needed by modern cameras. Still, it has made me painfully aware of the distinctly different lighting needs one faces in event video.

A very wide angle, yet soft light is required for subjects in close proximity (one to two meters). Beyond three meters the subject needs a concentrated, yet soft light. My micro-cool works great at about four to five meters. The entire scene is a balanced and evenly lit. It is too bright at less than four meters, requiring a diffusion filter to soften the dispersion. Currently the diffusion media I am using provides excellent dispersion of light within one to two meters, but is insufficient at two to four meters. I have yet to find the diffusion media that provides that mid-distance balance.

I have concluded the best approach to event documentary video is to have an on-camera light that is effective one to three meters, and to rely on some off-camera method beyond three meters. I have not found the product. Perhaps other members can provide suggestions.
