problem with my GL2, need some help Can't Post

Last week I was shooting an Australian Rules football game outdooors and several times I got a message that said to remove the cassette from the camera. I can't remember the exact wording, but it was something like that. It would not allow me to record. I opened up the tape deck door and pushed it back in and it seemed to run fine. It did this several times during the course of the day. It seemed to do this when I would stop and then start again within a short period of time. I would then stop and wait for a little while longer before I started it up again and it seemed to work fine. Does that make any sense? I have not had this problem before.

Last night I taped a school play for over three hours and no problem. Of course for that I just let it run and don't stop and start too much.

Today I let a guy borrow my camera for a wedding and he told me that he got the same error and he did say that he was starting and stopping frequently. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Do you think the heads are just dirty? I'd like to have some sort of idea what might be wrong before I send it in and spend a fortune for someone to look at it. Thanks for any help you could give me.

My XL1s was doing this for awhile and I had to send it in for service. I think they only had to clean the heads, but I've heard that some people have had to get the heads replaced. Its annoying isn't it!

Had this a long time ago on my GL2s. Turned out being the pinch rollers and the tape drive mechanism. Evidentally they got a little out of adjustment and when the tension on the tape being pulled over the heads falls below a certain tolerance you get the message on your screen. TOok the tech awhile to figure it out but once they replace the tape drive mechanism they have been fine ever since. There is a big long post about it on DVINFO.net in the GL2 forums. It will take some digging but every now and then someone digs up the link and send me an email.

Thanks for the reply Annie. I just went out yesterday and bought a head cleaner and will give that a try. I hope it's that simple. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to send it in. I sure hope that I don't have to get them replaced. Yes, it is very annoying, especially since I have a wedding next week.

Thanks Philip. I now have something to suggest to a tech if I need to get it looked at. That should be a big help. I'll try and check out that link on DVINFO.net. Thanks.

Apparently this "remove the cassette" problem with the GL2 is not so uncommon. I checked the DVINFO.net site and there were many who had the same problem. A couple people said that they sent it in to Canon and they have a policy for this particular problem to charge no more than $50. One guy said he sent it to the Canon repair center in NJ, which is only about an hour from my house, and it only cost $35. I hope that I can be so lucky. Thanks Philip for the direction on that site and I hope this will be a solution to my problem.

No problem....keep us posted on the outcome. I wish mine would have been only $50. It ended up being 300.
