still frame resolution Can't Post

I am confused at how the numbers of pixels are reported when people describe the resolution of various camcorders and digital cameras in producing stills. Is it legitimate to add all the pixels in each of three CCD's to imply that you have a megapixel camcorder? Advertisers seem to do just that, even though each CCD only contributes to part of the color spectrum.
Don't they have to be superimposed, giving only the same three or four hundred image points instead of being added up into the millions?
The reason for this question is that I am trying to understand if the newer camcorders surpass the XL-1 in still image quality, or is it just hype?
