thinking about buying XL2 Can't Post

i have an XL1, thinking about buying another camera. should i go XL2 or some other camera that will compliment the XL1 better? I'm thinking in the range of 6-8 grand with lenses etc.
i plan on doing some corporate gigs, as well as some indie shorts on my own. don't mind spending some cash for good equipment. basically i want to be able to get any shot i want and not be hampered by equipment.

thanks in advance

If you like your current camera, the XL-2 is a good choice. The two are largely compatible, so you'll have plenty of budget to go around.

I don't need to tell you that many shooters are rushing to HD; in this arena the XL-H1 looks very good and the JVC GY-HD100U is becoming popular with indies and broadcast types. The downside to HD is that you won't be able to share much with your current rig, and the market is young and still developing. This will be demonstrated at NAB in April where there's sure to be a pack of new offerings and yet another promise that HD delivery is just around the corner...

Whatever you do, don't buy into the pitch on tossing what you have and buying a couple of the cheaper HDV cams. In a maturing market, I think this option will turn out to be a false economy for anyone without a compelling reason to switch immediately.

You are a Canon user like I.
I cannot think of a single reason to NOT buy the XL2. Simply put, it's the same great camera as the XL1 with MORE great stuff!
The sheer number of indie filmmakers who use XL1s and XL2s for their movies should be compelling enough to pull the trigger.

Cheers!

To be clear, I don't own an XL2 but I have tried one out.
I own an XL1S and a GL2.

I can't think of a single accessory that is an absolute MUST.

The best thing you can do to improve your camerawork is probably some sort of camera-steadying device. I can't bring myself to buy one of these because they just look dorky. Crazy

I got my XL1S at Abe's of Maine - www.abesofmaine.com They were pretty fast, honest and I save a couple of Franklins ordering from them.

Also, if you go with B&H you can sleep easy about a quality product from a quality shop.

Lucky you.
I'm envious.

Cheers!

Anton Bauer is the battery.
I guess the kit includes some good Anton Bauer long-life batteries. If you have a light on your cam, the Anton Bauer will also power it, I think.

But I think the beauty of getting the XL2 for you is that you are using a lot of the same accessories as the XL1 and therefore saving money. The batteries for your XL1 should work for your XL2, I think. (don't take my word for it... look it up.) If it does then you're saving a bunch of money.

Cheers!

Not a "must", but a cool option would be one of the Marshall 5.6 in. top-mount LCDs that B&H has... Great for hand-heald and overhead work.

Re: [stonecutter] thinking about buying XL2 [In reply to] Can't Post

I used Premiere 5, then Premiere 6, then Premiere Pro. I loved the filters and the interface but hated the instability. A lot depends on the hardware you use - I understand Matrox cards are really great for Premiere - but I ended up switching to Canopus stuff.

I got Edius 2 then Edius 2.5 and am now on Edius Pro3.

What Edius lacks in sheer number of filters, it makes up in rock solid stability, lightning fast real-time effects and editing as well as some of the best mpeg and video compression algorithms around.

I don't know anything about Vegas though - many Vegas users are avid fans and swear by Vegas. Speaking of "avid"...

If you're starting from scratch, however, I would suggest using Avid - it's what the professionals in Hollywood use to edit their stuff 95% of the time. So if you plan on growing out of event videography and moving toward Hollywood productions, Avid is the way to go.

But for me, I'm pretty stoked about Edius.

Cheers!

(Not trying to start a flamimg war here, but...)

While it is true that Avid is still a very big player in Hollywood and probably true that 85% (Avid's claim) of what you see on TV/silver screen is produced on Avid, this is changing rapidly in the smaller (less than 2K) formats. A growing portion of the smaller formats are being cut on Final Cut Pro, so much so that you'll even hear the name mentioned on TV by indies and smaller producers in interviews.

Avid is a very good system and once again has the advantage of running on either a Mac or a PC. I won't criticize any Avid product but in the context of "starting from scratch" it's just sensible to mention that a large percentage of those "dominant" Avid workstations cost more than my house... After you leave the PC/Mac-based lower-end products, costs quickly move into the 6-figure zone. A friend is hoping to get an Avid Adreneline system sited in his small TV production studio for less than $50K - I hope he can can pull it off. Systems used in feature films can cost 5-10 times as much.

From a skills standpoint, there's no denying the resume value of knowing the Avid system, and knowing Avid and FCP is even more attractive.

thanks guys-
i just pulled the trigger! from bhphoto i bought the XL2, with the 3x super wide lens, and a few other accessories.
i'm sure you'll be hearing from me when i unpack the beast!

My brother, who is just learning editing, uses Avid. But he couldn't get Avid to recognize the XL1 as a device. So I think using a deck will alleviate that problem. Thanks to both for your input on that software.

can't wait!!

Re: [stonecutter] thinking about buying XL2 [In reply to] Can't Post

I have always used the Sony cameras and currently have a HD-FX1 sony and a sony vx9000(shoulder mount DVCAM). I have been looking into the xl2 and am very impressed with it and need it for my commercial work that I do during the winter time. What is everyones opinions on switching from Sony to Canon and is it a good Idea or should I just keep the Sony for its HD capabilities and get the XL2 for other work.

Re: [relanusa] thinking about buying XL2 [In reply to] Can't Post

Without getting into a "my brand" war, there are design differences between Sony and Canon and they show when used. Both do things the other won't in some circumstances. The most perceptible of these is the way they color, but that can be minimized through tuning. Canon's "frame mode" (which is one reason I like Canons) is a bit more difficult because it has to do with how the circuitry behaves during shooting. The bottom line usually comes out that which ever you are most expert with is the better camera.

If you like and need a camera like the XL-2, get one but expect that matching back won't be a snap, especially if you use 16:9 widescreen or 24p settings.

As far as keeping the Sonys or switching completely, given the current state of HD my personal feeling is you might benefit in selling the Sonys while they are "hot models" and make another HD brand decision when you can actually deliver HD footage easily. If you like the look/feel of the XL-2 you'll probably go crazy when you have a chance to shoot an XL-H1 or successor. For events and weddings, HD is still in it's infancy.
