Thanks Don even though I normally wouldn't use 12 bit I appreciate the info to let me I can do this if I want. PS the reference in my manual shows up on page 51 (XL1S) Thanks smitty : : Hi. I am having problems with setting the canon xl1 for a two-channel recording (left and right) recording with an external mic on one channel and simultaneously recording atmo sound with the camera mic onto the other channel. what are the settings for the menu (12bit or 16bit, line, mic ??? etc.....) ... : See page 38 of the XL1 manual (can be downloaded fromthe canondv web site) : Leave the onboad mic connected normally. it will record on the first stereo pair. : Connect the MA-100 RCA cables to the the Audio2 input, leave the small power cable connected to the 5 power jack by the analog video output on the back of the handle. : From the menu, set audio mode to "12 bit, ST-1,2" : From the menu, set the Audio 2 inout level to match your source (MIC or MIC ATT, do not use a line level source with the MA100). : Connect the external mic to the MA100. : Use AGC or manual gain control for boith Audio1 and Audio2 (settings behind the door) as meets your needs. : Set the Audio meter to the input of interest (ST-1, ST-2, or mixed) by pressing the Audio Monitor button and observing the selected source on the meter. : Practice until you can do it well before an important shoot where you will use this capability. : Note that 12-bit mode uses a 32 kHz sample rate, so the frequency response and audio quality is limited to about FM broadcast level
