xl1s audio problems Can't Post

All of a sudden I'm unable to record audio, I have 2 mics and neither will work. I've tried all kinds of settings in the audio panel and even resorted to reading the manual (thats desperation) still no success. I'm pretty new to the camera so I am probably doing something stupid. Any help will be appreciated

How are you connecting the mics? eg. audio1 with a xlr adapter such as ma100 or ma200.
Does the onboard mic work? in the menu do you have mic set or line?
If you could describe how your inputing the mic we could walk you thru the settings. That is likely the problem.

Hey Smitty,
Thanks for your re-ply. I'm using the on board mic. In the menu the VCR set up is as follows: rec mode ....sp, output ch...L/R, Audio 1 in, Audio 2 in, mix select.. variable, Audio mode... 16 bit. when I go to audio 1/mic in the audio panel under the little door and then go back to the menu and change the audio 1 in setting to mic I can pick up a little faint noise in my head set. when I go to att20 or line its dead. but its still not really picking up anything even in mic. the audio monitor is showing nothing.

Your menu sounds slightly different than mine. You do have the XL1S?
Under the door in the bottom half ,labelled "audio 1/MIC" the input select has 3 settings .mic.......mic att...... audio 1. It should be set to.... mic
Then set the rec level.try both A (auto gain) and M (turn up the manual level dial).close the door. Open the menu to vcr setup if audio mode is 16 bit ,the audio 1 in and audio 2 in should be blanked out eg. ---
exit the menu and set the headphone volume up.Do an audio check using both the meters and the headphones. If you still have nothing try both A and M behind the door.If still nothing on the meters try a different mic.Let me know how you make out.Sorry if I'm going over it in detail but I find it easy to skip a step and have a problem myself.

Hey Smitty , Thanks. I actually just figured it out. I got brave or stupid and opened up the camera. One of those flat wires that connect the two halves was not conected. It had "audio" writen on it, and after studying it for awhile I figured out where and how to reconect it. This fix was probably 1 in 1000. but I was desperate. Thanks again for your help.

Re: [Ray Stewart] xl1s audio problems [In reply to] Can't Post

Assuming there is no problem with the camera's audio system, I would immediately suspect a broken or crossed wire in the microphone chain of connections. In any audio circuit, the connections are always the weakest link, the greatest failure point.
I would start at one end of the chain and carefully work towards the other, checking and double checking each cable in the chain with an ohm meter set at 1k resistance.

In my experience a thorough check of audio cables usually finds the problem. A clean cable check means a close look at first the microphones, then the camera itself.

Good luck!
