Cassie II Update Can't Post

According to the new edition of the WEVA magazine the new Cassie II will be unveiled at the WEVA Convention in Las Vegas Aug 16-19.
According to the article, and DRACO, the Cassie II will be much faster, using a 233 MHz processor, starting with the entry level Avio model.
The entry level priced Avio is reported to be $1,495 and will include built-in hard drive for up to three hours of DV-quality video or nine hours of VHS-quality video. And much more.
Also according to the article the Cassie II Avio can be upgraded to DV I/O. The new system uses 3.0 editing software and with the DV I/O the edited project can be output to a DV cassette so your final edit will be strictly digital.
According to the article the Cassie II is expected to be at dealerships in September and ready for shipping by October.
It will be interesting to see how much the price of a system configured as most people will want will climb from the $1,495 entry level price.
Anyway, that's what was reported in the WEVA magazine.

Re: Cassie II Update Can't Post

I heard from a colleague in Germany that common expectation from those 'in the know' is that the Cassie II will not be available in the timescales suggested, and will be considerably dearer than the initially projected guide price.
As a non-user who is very interested in the Avio, I would be delighted to find that this pessimism is unfounded.
Regards,
martin.

Re: Cassie II Update [In reply to] Can't Post

Martin:
I hope the information you got from Germany is not true, but it wouldn't surprise me. One thing Draco won't do, if past practice is any indicator, is put a piece of junk on the market and let their customers de-bug it for them. Can you say "Windows 95"?
As for the price, that was the quoted "entry" price. What does the Casablanca enter for, around $3,495 or so? But by the time you add a hard drive big enough to edit anything more that the smallest project, add some very desireable software, etc, the cost jumps to $7,000 to $10,000.
I have seen Draco's video, it's impressive, and also had a demo by a dealer in Austin. I'm impressed and have agonized many hours whether to take the plunge or not.
Then just when I was about to bite the bullet I read the article in the WEVA magazine. So my decision is on hold until the dealer gets back from the convention.
I would imagine that a "really useable" price for the Cassie II will jump up somewhat from the "entry price". Sort of like difference between your basic stick shift car and the one you really want with the bells and whistles.
I plan to call the dealer next Monday and to see what light he can shed on the situation. Who knows, the present 060 Cassie with an 18 gig hard drive may still be the way to go.
One other thing that really impresses me about the Cassie is the user satisfaction. You can't say that about users of computer based systems. I have only heard good things from users and have only heard of one person who was totally unhappy with the unit. And the way he expressed himself sort of leads me to believe he wouldn't be happy with any system.
We'll see
