Message for Pat Can't Post

Pat,
Without sounding rude, you might like to read the small print at the top of the page that says "NO COMMERCIAL ADS, PLEASE!" I am not all that clever, but suspect this would apply to you. After all this is a user forum and I'm sure that if any of us here were wanting to find a supplier then we would be wishing to here from someone without an interest in the company recommended.
Just my thoughts.
Cheers,
Arny

Blatantly prohibited commercial post nothwithstanding ...
Let's just accept that claim ... a 233 Mhz machine is overclocked to 280 MHz ... that's still less than 1/10th of the speed of today's inexpensive PCs, on which the vast majority of video editing systems have been built.
The fact is, that for that $2900, you can get the hardware and software for a system 10 times the speed and memory ... flexibility and capabilities MSUS has indicated they will NEVER attempt to develop ... the latest DVD burner with software ... and at least half of your own time back -- time saved by not having to click 8 times through four different screens for a simple operation, and the endless workarounds on the Avio for features already implemented on other systems with a click & drag.
And if you need to work at more than one workstation, the cost drops dramatically ... my 2nd PC-based video workstation cost less than $700 including two hard drives (200 GB total) and a DVD burner. But with Avio/Kron/Prestige, the second, third, fourth and fifth systems cost just as much as the first.
Please don't misunderstand ... the Avio has a place in the world of video: quick, simple, cutting together and mixing of analog & digital footage -- maybe even adding a few basic FX & titles. Beyond that, it becomes counterproductive.
Pricewise, the AvioProDV should be priced around the $999 point, including an 80GB drive, with the AvioProDV-DVD running around $1299. Beyond that, it's just not worth it.
And unless you have a customer specifically paying you to do a specific function targeted by the add-on software, the add-on software is simply not worth it -- it puts the system cost way beyond its worth, and stretches the learning curve of the system beyond that of more complex systems.
Let's just hope that MSUS & their German parent company will realize their place and price in the market before they completely fail. They came close to going under with the Kron debacle, but seem to have revived their financial coffers by convincing thousands to buy a barely changed OS called SmartEdit for a couple hundred dollars a unit. Since then, they've pretty much killed off their "loyal" customer base by various ingenious methods, which are too numerous to enumerate here. So once again it's back to the newbies -- and today, they're just too smart to pay three times the price for 1/2 of the product.

Hmmm ... looks like you've been well trained in the MacroSystem school of marketing ... insult their intelligence, insult them personally, brag on yourself, then expect them to overpay for underpowered tools.
Hey, it works for MSUS ... just keep on dreamin, fellow.
Meanwhile, I'll get back to my rock-solid, stable (right out of the box), powerful PC-based editor.

Re: Commercial ads [In reply to] Can't Post

Pat,
I finished high school many years ago and currently run my own business with with 7 permanent and 3 casual employees and a varying number of sub-contractors. I manage to promote my business without putting ads all over every forum I can find.
My post was not intended as an insult but merely to point out the blatently obvious to the not so educated.

I generally do not judge people without getting to know them but in this case I will make an exception :-) D#?KHEAD.
Some people will buy Casablanca products, most people don't like having a product jammed down their throat.
Go to marketing school and see if you can learn something.

Re: Traditional MSUS Sales Method .. [In reply to] Can't Post

Mr. Bob,
Just wondering if you realized that this forum is actually called the "Casablanca User Forum"??? If you're using a computer, shouldn't you be looking for some help in a forum where people are using editing tools that you want to specialize in? I have a lot of friends who use computer based editors and would never come to the CUF, since they have no interest in these machines. I find it odd that a person such as you specializing in "computers" instead of MSUS products would be caught dead at a forum like this. I honestly would think you would be spending too much time on the phone with computer tech support to be worried about everyone and their petty little Avios.
Just wondering.

I won't go into history of the DraCo Casablanca here (check out http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MSUS/message/2 ), but suffice to say that I have bought, used, and still own more MacroSystem products than most MSUS dealers and certainly more than those relative beginners who purport to be "experts" here.

That's probably because you prefer to believe the hype of the Casablanca ads rather than doing the research on the newer, more powerful, less expensive systems. True, 8 years ago, the DraCo, then the Casablanca were less frustrating and easier to use than comparably priced PCs. But that's all changed.
In reality, I've never had to call tech support for any of the 3 editing PCs I currently use or the editing software that installs quicker than installing Avio software on a new drive.
The very first function I did when checking out the software I currently use was logging pieces from a 15 minute video segment into my old 1.2GHz PC. I let the tape roll while I chose about 5 different segments, and then clicked "batch record" and walk away. 5 minutes later, they were all there and ready to edit. 10 minutes later, I had a finished video, playing back 3 layers of DV video including multiple PIPs, superimpositions, and clean titles. I honestly didn't expect it to work so easily, either. At that point, I realized there suddenly was a tremendous shift in video & computer technology.
Yes, I still use my rack of Casablancas for a very specific basic project each year, and once in a while in between when all the other systems are busy ... becoming increasingly annoyed by the bugginess [STILL] and random glitches [STILL!!] and the gray vertical lines on each side of the picture [STILL!!!!]. But I paid the big bucks for the tools, and like the '92 Grand Caravan, they still get me there and back with a little coaxing and a little repair, so I'll keep using them until they die.
Of course, I'm very disappointed that MS has not provided any advanced editing software since way back in '96. They are capable of it, but they just don't think enough of their customers to grow with them. Too bad.

Patrick,
What an incredible co-incidence!!! You're in luck!!! Another couple of guys on this very forum just so happen to live so very close to you that they even share your internet connection!!! I'm sure if you zipped off a note to Pat or DJROCK, they'd be glad to extoll the virtues of the new DJWonderBOX!!!
They're incredibly fast. From what I understand, they'll render out a 2 second page turn in LESS THAN 10 MINUTES!! Wooo Hoooo!!!!
