The abundant support for PhotoShop is very nice, but it wasn't the primary reason for me to invest the money. After tinkering with several other capable programs for photo editing (in the end, I like JASC's PaintShop best), I ran into difficulties with color matching. Basically, I was not getting the same appearance off my calibrated monitor onto the prints. This was even more exaggerated in images of pale bride's in white dresses in front of a light background.... ie situations when the normal color/contrast balance isn't even close to any predisposed profile. Things flat out went crazy on the prints. Perhaps I gave up on the other programs too early, but I was quickly convinced by photo forum users that this was another necessity of PhotoShop. I can now confirm that Photoshop does a very good job with color management. I still think JASC PaintShop was more intuitive to use, but I've adapted readily to Adobe PhotoShop. Although I really don't know, I still watch and wait for PaintShop to get their color management up to grade. For now, I do believe that the quality of my prints is far better, and I have not printed "junk" since switching and calibrating (via proofing and ICC profiling). Its worth it if your serious about photography and/or graphics. If photo is a hobby, stay with PaintShop or another program.
