Re: [Brackish] Alternatives to Photoshop???? [In reply to] Can't Post

There are a lot of programmes that compete with ps. The advantage ps has is the amount of support from the numbers of users. Its interface is also like all the other adobe apps, so if you use 1, it is easy to learn the others. Now it is becoming very integrated into the suite.

Gimp is a competitor which isn't too bad, but I always found it awkward and tricky to do masks and copies of masked selections. The work flow was a bit difficult to get used to. However, I think it is free if you want to play with it.

Also, there are tons of third party plugins and "how to" instruction available for PS.

Some other paint programs which you might like to try:

JASC Paint Shop Pro (free 30 day trial download)
Painter Classic
Corel Photo-Paint (bundled with Corel Draw)

Everyone seems to use Photoshop. Why is that?
Are there any other programs that are just as good or better?

You can get an awful lot accomplished just using Photoshop Elements. I think it runs around $100. I believe it comes packaged with the Canon cameras.

Re: [Brackish] Alternatives to Photoshop???? [In reply to] Can't Post

The abundant support for PhotoShop is very nice, but it wasn't the primary reason for me to invest the money.

After tinkering with several other capable programs for photo editing (in the end, I like JASC's PaintShop best), I ran into difficulties with color matching. Basically, I was not getting the same appearance off my calibrated monitor onto the prints. This was even more exaggerated in images of pale bride's in white dresses in front of a light background.... ie situations when the normal color/contrast balance isn't even close to any predisposed profile. Things flat out went crazy on the prints.

Perhaps I gave up on the other programs too early, but I was quickly convinced by photo forum users that this was another necessity of PhotoShop. I can now confirm that Photoshop does a very good job with color management. I still think JASC PaintShop was more intuitive to use, but I've adapted readily to Adobe PhotoShop. Although I really don't know, I still watch and wait for PaintShop to get their color management up to grade.

For now, I do believe that the quality of my prints is far better, and I have not printed "junk" since switching and calibrating (via proofing and ICC profiling). Its worth it if your serious about photography and/or graphics. If photo is a hobby, stay with PaintShop or another program.

We have photoshop but I've got to say we've been using Paint Shop Pro 9 more. It's only a $100 program but has been very powerful in easy fixes that just take too long in photoshop. However, we've been using both depending on what we want to do.

Photoshop, When you absolutely, positively have to remove every pimp in the picture, except no substitutes.

That quote sounds so much cooler coming from Samual L Jackson.

If you like the cost of GIMP, but prefer the Photoshop interface...
GimpShop is a Photoshop-like interface for The Gimp. If you look farther down the page, you'll see that it is available for OSX, Linux, and Win32 as well.

While I haven't used PhotoPlus, I have used their DTP program, PagePlus, since 1996. Serif is well known in Britain for making software similar to Adobe's at a fraction of the price. Plus, if you call Serif and tell them you can't afford their software, they will discount it even more, at least they always have for me.

Here is one more to the list that might be worth trying

http://www.mediachance.com/pbrush/index.html

I haven't used this product, but I've been using DVDLab for authoring since version one and it has been really solid. It is $45 and has a fully functional 30 trial. All their software does. No spyware or junk like that, that I have found.

Don't forget Uleads PhotoImpact 10;

Page: http://www.ulead.com/pi/runme.htm

Comparisons: http://www.ulead.com/pi/compare2.htm

Rumor is that PI 11 is coming sooner than later.

I use it for both photo and video with excellent results, and the bang/buck ratio is very favorable.
