Re: [Brackish] Canon flash only for Canon cam? Nikon flash? [In reply to] Can't Post

While I'm not positive I would think they would still work the same. I would look at the shoe mount and the bottom of the flash to be certain that the shoe contacts all line up or are the same pattern. I went with a Canon flash only because I had heard good things about it.

The SB-800 is the best flash, IMO. Smile I'm not a Nikon fan, BTW.

Was using a Nikon SB20 on my 20D for awhile and it seemed to work fine. But I just compared both units and the 580EX in it's native ETTL mode, with no exposure compensation gave a better image exposure wise. The SB20 produced a hotter image.

Communication is what may/ may not work (such as ETTL setting of flash level, and distance information).

If it works now, it might not on next generation.........

Perhaps better said as safest...

Just like the lenses, the off-brand items may not offer full features on future cameras the way an original canon will for a canon base.

How's things going with the photo side? Are you advertising photo
for '06? What lenses do you have now?

I have yet to push the photo side yet...I'm building up a portfolio to show prospectives that come along. So far I've gotten good comments from those that I have shown but unless you have all the tools you need (which I don't yet) I'm not really in a hurry to do so. Eventually I'll get there but I will say at many weddings that I'm showing up at, I have a better camera and lens than the pro? I feel bad when that happensAngelic

I agree that I would go with two strobes and umbrellas for formals at the church. It's more work but the difference in lighting is so different from church to church that you almost need them.

Re: [Brackish] Canon flash only for Canon cam? Nikon flash? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have done groups of 15-20 indoors using 3 flashes diffused by lightspheres. Indoors though, I bounce light off ceilings and walls inside the normal venues. No umbrellas here, though I do carry a reflector for enhancing a few natural light spots. Of course, I may use 2 flashes for larger groups in outdoor shoots, though most will still only need the flash on the camera...

Admittedly, I am somewhat limited in my lighting, and have been declining events at high ceiling / dark venues (only 1 in Knoxville like that so far) as I don't plan to lug large light kit to the events. I pack and travel as light as possible. I'd also clarify that most of my clients are placing greater emphasis on candid/journalistic shots for the coffee-table albums were making now.

That travel light mantra is especially critical when we are doing photo-video packages.

Re: [Brackish] Canon flash only for Canon cam? Nikon flash? [In reply to] Can't Post

Insofar as 35mm film cameras are concerned every manufacturer has their own unique commuication protocols. A Nikon flash unit will provide only the most basic exposure features if attached to a Canon camera, and vice versa. Most after market flash manufacturers provide connection modules for each brand of camera. Virtually any flash can be fired from any camera so long as one is willing to forgo exposure communication bewteen the two pieces of equipment. Auto-Thyristor flash units are based upon a specific f-stop and distance of subject from lens to determine the amount of light needed for a proper exposure. Based upon reflection of light off of the subject, the flash gun's light sensor will alter light output. It doesn't matter whether the subject is 60 feet or 6 inches from the camera. Shutter speed is irrelevant to the flash head, but essential to the camera. I suspect the same would be true for digital cameras.

My old Canon Powershot Pro 70 digital camera can use any flash, but the set-up is so tedious and the results so arbitrary it is not worth the effort. A Canon flash makes everyting automatic. My most recent Canon digital camera doesn't have a flash hot shoe. However, in manual exposure mode, with a diffusion filter on the pop-up flash and a light sensitive slave switch, my 25 year old Sunpak 411 set on auto produces incredible results.
