Yah. Closed eyes are a desirable feature for many photogs.

Some cameras have a redeye reduction feature which emits a strobe effect burst to get the pupils to react and close a bit in time for the main flash. Another thing I've seen with my 20D is that if there is insufficient light available for the autofocus to work, the flash will do that strobe burst thing to give the autofocus sensors something to lock onto.

That I didn't know. Does it seem to make their eyes go shut for the
main flash?

No, the pre flash is bright enough to close the pupil a bit so there is less reflection from inside the eye. Its the reflection that causes red-eye. You notice cats have a lot of red-eye? That's because they have big pupils so they can see in lower light.

Re: [Dieps] Is pre-flash a good thing? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm shooting Nikon with an SB800 and don't notice too many people blinking. Nikon's flash technology is stellar though! The pre-flash is part of the metering system as well as the wireless transmission system for other Nikon wireless flashes. And somehow those wireless flashes can tell what TTL setting to be at. It's crazy, but works awesome!!

It works great for the stills...but sucks when you are videotaping the event and have the strobe effect.

Won't remove red eye, but raising the flash on a flash bracket will. Also, best to use a diffuser and or bounce the flash.

He's saying that from a videographer's perspective the pre-flashing is annoying.
I'd have to say that you don't even need to worry about it. I shoot wedding full-time and don't seem to run into any issues.
It is a phenomenal flash though! Definitely worth the money.

Just get it and you won't regret it.
