Re: [Brackish] Metz flash as an alternative? [In reply to] Can't Post

I work with a photog who uses these too but have no idea about the differences between these and the 580 I'm using. I'm happy with mine so far and would highly recommend it.Wink

That helps reduce red eye. The further you can get the flash from the lens the less chance of red eye.

You would have to check the specs, but in general the Metz flash will be more powerful, more moveable head, and larger auxiliary powerpack for extended shooting.

This photog that I saw using it had it in some type of bracket
where the flash was not on the side of the cam but rather
the flash was over the top of the camera, so that the
flash was about a foot above the cam, centered.

They have a killer flash bracket like this. Expensive as all get out, but I hear it works great and is built like a brick house. Wish I had the cash to drop on it.

A Stroboframe bracket is much more affordable. I used to use my Metz 45-CL1 for groups and times when I need to throw flash a long distance.

The farther away from the center of the camera lens a flash unit is placed the better is the elimination of "red-eye". It is a matter of optics and physics, neither ow which I know very well. Many photographers prefer a higher position for a flash unit because it more closely replicates the position of the sun, as in "high in the sky", and therefore provides a more natural looking light.

Re: [Brackish] Metz flash as an alternative? [In reply to] Can't Post

As an additional comment a month later, I feel the handle mount flash guns really kick butt when you need that kind of power. My Pentax Af-400T (introduced in the 80's and never updateded because there wasn't a need to do so) will perfectly expose a group photo 60' wide at 40' from the front row. I have done it.

Handle mounts are way more capable than hot shoe flashes if you think in terms of 0-120mph. In very general terms a handle flash gets real efficient at about 10 mph and is capable of way more than 120. In most situations I feel they will out perform hot shoe flashes until you start thinking about weight and ease of use. They are big and heavy. They suck power (mine needs a 6 battery C-size belt battery pack to get me through the day).

Whether it is Metz, Sunpak, Quantum, or the few major mfg that support the external flash market, handle mount flash guns are very powerful and flexible lighting accessories. However, I don't see many wedding photographers using them. I think is has more to do with how they frame their subjects. Shoe mount flashes have become quite sophisticated. Try and buy a really good pro model for less than $250. Not possible. I think the end result is that shoe mount flash technology can cover so much more in terms of exposure situations the handle mount flash is really for extreme situations.
