Re: [Brackish] New product from Adobe just for professional photogs: LIGHTROOM [In reply to] Can't Post

Or just get Aperture, which is already fully developed and on the market, not a beta promise. And from having tried out both, Aperture is going to be the prevailing Mac platform pro-photo managment app.

Guess Adobe dosen't want to get left behind on the Mac platform like they did with Preimer Pro not going head to head with FCP. Thus, a semi-functional beta. Good marketing move, though, I must say!

Lightroom is available for download as a beta. Get it, try it. Aperture is a full blown developed app. They both achieve the same goal. PhotoShop is a whole different ball game. But both interface with Photoshop the same. Just that Apple is now at where Adobe says they're going with this beta version of Lightroom.

I'm using both, Lightroom has a LONG way to go in development. Both are very similar, almost identical. It'll come down to who utilizes the hardware best to speed things up. RAW files are HUGE amounts of data to deal with. On a Mac I'd use Aperture cause it'll be faster, tuned to OS X's Core technologies. We'll have to see if Adobe can leverage the same hardware features. Both will be really nice, once Adobe releases a full version in several more months.

I'm currently training with Apple for Aperture, and it has tons of features that will be coming out in the next few releases. This competition will be very good for the photographers who use either app.

Let me clarify that neither Lightroom nor Aperture is ment to replace Photoshop. Both will integrate with PS very tightly. They are file management systems for professoinal photographers who have dozens, if not hundreds, if not thousands of photos to deal with. Bot offer the most basic of photo correction tools. But Photoshop will still be the major external editor for them to work with. So, File Management on one side, advanced image editing on the other.

I can tell you that Aperture (and I assume Lightroom) does MUCH better sharpening and straightening than PS. But PS is not yet a truely, fully 16-bit yet. So it doesn't handle RAW files as elegantly as Aperture or Lightroomm. I'm going to assume that since RAW is the photo format for pros now, that Adobe will bump up PS to be able to handle full true 16-bit images and it's RAW handling ability, too.
