Re: [Brackish] How much do you really need a macro? [In reply to] Can't Post

depends what you want to do. Some normal lenses can get in close anyway and can fill the frame. Some lenses have a dual ability like the 60 micro or I have a 135 micro that can be a distance and macro lens. For me. photography is about bringing out the detail and I am intrigued about getting right up to the lustre in a diamond ring or the texture of the bouquet. You only need it if that is how you see things or what you look for.

I've never owned one. On my old slrs I used to take the lens off and hold it on there backwards to do macro photography.

I bought a 60mm Macro lens about a month ago. Haven't used it at all, and it is currently for sale. I tried to use it, but it's really not my style to carry around extra equipment during the day.

I think it's more of a creative 'want' more than a functional need, at least for weddings - kind of like a fisheye lens.

My small digital camera (a sony, looks like a mini slr but it isn't one - it's an slr-wannabe) - I bought a macro lens for it and it works really well. I've got some cool shots.
I think for the slr though I'd probably spend my money on a wide angle and a 1.4 lens or something, maybe save for a cool fish eye.

depends what you want to do though. :)

I just use my 17-55 or 70-200. It isn't ideal, but I really doubt any customer would be able to tell the difference.

I carry my 17-55 on one camera and 70-200 on the other camera. On my belt is a small case that holds extra batteries and CF cards.

Hi Jeff,

That's the same set-up we had at our first wedding and it worked well. A few times I wished I could go tighter with the 17-55 (Brian had the tele), but I made due. Also a few times I thought about switching to a different lens for one reason or another - but there rarely seems time to do that when you're in the thick of things.

Here's me working a wedding shoot. Shooting with the 17-55, 70-200 over my shoulder. Nothing else to worry about. Screenshot from my video guy's VX2000.

Yes I shoot RAW. Depending on how long the wedding is, I'll take over 1500 photos. I average around 100/hour.
I have 15 GB of CF cards available if needed.

I've never used them all up, although I've come close before.

Remember, it's a tool.
Want it only as bad as you need it or if it helps your creativity.

Canon 60mm macro.......
