Re: [Brackish] All natural light photography? [In reply to] Can't Post

Check monte zucker's site. Denis reggie says he doesn't use flash either but he does. Check the wedding forum on nikon cafe, there is a recent post there of no flask. In the UK it is quite common to not be allowed to use flash for the ceremony. I prefer to use ambient or just a little fill flash to keep things quick and simple.

I bought three of Nikon's fastest lenses for doing just this.

BTW, off topic...Remember that RED video camera everyone was talking about? My friend told me yesterday they use Nikon lenses to test it in development, not Canon.

You can get some 2.8 zooms that might be a workable alternative.

Not 'constantly'. You need at least two bodies to shoot weddings, so just carry both on you with two different lengths mounted; wide and mid-telephoto. 90% of your shots will be doable...if not 100%.

You'll have a tough time doing ambiant light shooting with zooms. ISO 1600+ city.

That extra stop or two will mean the difference between 1600 iso and 800 or less tho.

It would work well if you had nice open shade for your formals outside. But if you get mixed lights/shadows then you're stuck with them without any fill light.

depends how you shoot and how close you can get. If it were 2 primes it would be an 50 for portraits and a 28 for groups, small rooms. I have been looking at a 35-70 2.8 zoom that would cover the 50 and 85 primes at a squeeze.

I honestly do not believe you can shoot a wedding 100% with ambient light. There are times when you NEED to use flash or at least use some flash for fill.
Also be aware that if you are shooting at F1.4 or something, your DOF will be super narrow, so you better make sure everybody in the shot is on the same focal plane!

Re: [Brackish] All natural light photography? [In reply to] Can't Post

My standard is iso 800.
1600, and in a pinch 3200 can also be used. Just make sure the electronic noise reduction has been set. Mine is always on so when I have the need for speed I dont have to give it a 2nd thought. Use the flash as fill. No matter how it looks to your eye, your brain makes corrections to make it look "right". The final result w/o fill will be everyone looking like racoons.

The higher the ISO the lower the quality. I use auto ISO and set an upper limit of 800 when shooting available light. Not sure but I don't think Canons have this capability. It's a great feature.

DOF is an issue but not so much at a distance. Only close up.

Canons do not have the auto ISO feature ... we make that decision and have to live with it.

This weekend I helped out a friend that is deathly afraid of shooting weddings. She usually gets talked into it by parents that had their kid's senior pics taken by her and are on a limited budget.

It was an older, somewhat small country church with dark wood. We were also blessed with some really nasty tungsten lighting. I went up to the balcony to shoot with the 70-200 and to get a decent shutter speed I needed to go to 3200 ISO. I've never done that before, but figured it was better than trying to bring the shot back from mud.

Anyway ... I did a series of shots at 3200 then ran them through Neat Image. (Noise Ninja is another good one.) I was very pleased with the results ... enough that I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

It's certainly not my preference to shoot at that level, but I don't think you have to think of the shot being lost if that's what it comes to.

What Colvin said.

I use five lenses. 28/1.4, 50/1.4, 85/1.4, 200/2, and a cheap 18-70 zoom. Only reason I kept the cheapo zoom is because it's actually a really sharp lens. Really great value for the buck.

If I had to take only two it would be the first two, or maybe the 85 instead of 50.

Good to know re: Neat Image / Noise Ninja. Never used software for noise before but it's good to hear success stories like this. I enable nose reduction inside the camera for ISO 400 up and it does a good job. Slows the frames per second down to 3 but I never use rapid fire at weddings anywho.

You know I was just thinking...I don't think I've ever even tried 1600 or higher on a digital camera. Have always limited my camera to 800. Only reason I have this idea in my head that it sucks is from the film days. Used to shoot 1600 film at rock concerts and the images were super super grainy. I'm gonna try it sometime.

same here. I use neat image and it is very good, so I might try bumping the iso next time I go out to take some bad weather shots.
