On the D30 (canon) I have played with it. I find that if I shoot RAW I can usually get things adjusted fine with one shot. It is on for one "round" of 3 shots, then you turn it back on again (from my experience). Also, if it is turned on on the flash, that over-rides any settings for it on the camera itself.

The only time I could see me using it would be to play with hdr but, as said, it is easier to alter the raw settings. It only takes a few seconds to get a light reading, take a shot and adjust to taste.
