Re: [Brackish] Cropping proofs? [In reply to] Can't Post

It doesn't pay to crop unless you know what the picture is being used for. Full frame from a digital camera is 8x12. If every picture is going to be in an album as an 8x10, cropping will have to occur. If they want a bunch as 4x6's-they will be full frame. So if you cropped them as 8x10's for the client, they will get cropped again to make a 4x6. Also with a digital album, they can be made any size or shape. There are times where you might want to crop some to get rid of something in the picture before showing it, but generally proofs are proofs. Not a finished product.

I have been cropping them, but I like what Videochickie has said so from now on I think no cropping unless necessary for proofs.

Never crop except for final prints ordered.

I would think you'd want to do a batch correct. It's easy to do in photoshop, you just create an action and do batch to your folder.
I usually copy first in case there are some pictures that it doesn't work well on.

I wouldn't want them to see them un-corrected at least with the contrast and saturation tweeked a little. otherwide they might think the photos are crappy and not order them.

That's how I do it anyway, not like I've had more than a 1/2 dozen or so jobs to do this on. I'd be interested to see what someone more into photography would do.

I learned this the long way... don't crop proofs b/c you can't get it back once it's gone. As mentioned above - for enlargements, etc., you'll regret it if you crop it too tight on a 4x6. Also, if you use it for an album layout - you may want to use some of the 'negative' space for a background or something.

Right now the only thing we do to proofs is batch process - adjust the exposure, add a little contrast and bump up the saturation, then run them through a noise reduction/sharpening action. But as far as assessing each individual image and editing for print - that's only if the client picks it or if we want to dress it up for the web or something. Kinda like editing all your raw footage and then going through and cutting out shots you don't want to use - doesn't really make sense. You only edit what you are going to keep.

That's why it's important to try not to change your camera settings too drastically while shooting - if you want to save time later. Of course, you want to shoot it correctly the first time, but we're all human. Sh*t happens. So if you shoot the first one in a series a little under or over-exposed (by the way, I shoot RAW), shoot them all the same so you can batch correct them later all at once. You can correct the first image and then apply the settings to the rest (synchronize). That makes it go much quicker later, esp if you have hundreds of images as with a wedding.

Jenn,

What type of noise reduction filter do you run on them?

Brian runs them thru Neat Image and adds a little sharpening. But we're still playing around with settings to get the most desired results.

Thanks Jenn
Do you use special software to view the raw file or just the stuff that came with the Canon?

I shoot RAW with the lowest quality JPG with it (RAW+JPG) so that I have a "thumbnail" with each raw image. Granted, it is an 1100+ wide thumbnail, but it allows me to sort RAW files just in the explorer folder in windows.

We've been using Adobe Bridge. But there's another popular one that I hear about - I think it's called Camera One or something like that.

It might seem like it ... but why aren't you using Digital Photo Professional? Did it not come with your camera? Does it not work? Have you tried it?

Cannon has a site with on-line tutorials on how to use it at http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/dpp2/index.html.

Re: [Sparky] Cropping proofs? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey Sparky,

I tried it but I think I buggered it up somehow and need to find the disk to reinstall it. A while ago I plugged in my Dad's 10D and tried to view a raw image. Since then ever time I open it the program freezes. I had never got to use raw and view it. I actually just took some raw photos earlier today with the intent to find the disk and reinstall it.

Do you like using it?

Actually - while in the middle of posting this I decided to try the program again. Since I have deleted the folder that the photo was in that came from the 10d it now opens fine. The problem was occuring when the program opens it just opened up the folder that the 10d raw photo was in and it froze it every time.
Weird.

Anyhoo, it is working now and I will try it. Thanks. ;)

Hmm, happened again. Only this time it let me use it for about 5 minutes then said that "DPP Viewer has encountered a problem and needs to close".

I'll probably unistall it and re-install it and hope that it works. I'd like to shoot raw and do some tests. As for now I'm using large jpg.

Mac or PC version? Also, make sure you have the latest version. Not sure which one it is.

The reason I ask about mac is that I will ocassionally have a problem on the mac. I started selecting about 10 to 20 images in the edit window and doing them that way ... saving as I went along. It hasn't crashed on me in ages. (That means it will next time I use it.)

ha ha, probably, sorry I jinxed you.

I'm on a pc. It's my new year's resolution to actually organize all the disks of software into one of those DVD disk books. At that point I'm going to re-install the program because it is grating my nerves. I did get to use it tonight for a bit and love the histogram and curves tool that I can see the change right away. Cool!
Is that what you batch correct on?

I was so proud of myself today I made an action in photoshop to batch correct or contrast and saturation.

Small things...

Re: [Shadow] Cropping proofs? [In reply to] Can't Post

All I know is that DPP is known for being pretty darned stable on a PC, but has some issues on a Mac.

I also have CS2 as well as Bibble Pro. Yes ... I've spent too much money. Don't even ask about my shopping carts! (No really ... don't even bother to ask.) Tongue

Just like with the cameras ... I'm really trying not to purchase a 30D next year because I'm not convinced that I need to pay more than what I would for a used 20D. That will give me 3 bodies and 3 lenses. I'm hoping that this first year of losing money will be my last.

Find something you're comfortable with and then quit searching. Your bank account will thank you.
