It also depends on how you are printing the photo. Inkjet printers put tiny dots together to create a color or blend of colors. They do this by putting basic colors really close to each other in varying quantities so that our eyes see the combination of colors as one color. If you do inkjet, you probably want no lower resolution than 200dpi, and 300dpi is better. So, with that in mind, at 300dpi a 1024/683 would be around 3 1/2 x 2 inches...at 200dpi you get 5 x 3 inches, and so forth... A true photo printer does not lay different colored dots down side by side, but overlays varying amounts of color on the same spot, so generally they are printed at about 150dpi, so you could get a good 4x6 from a 1024/683 image when printed with a photo printer (not an inkjet). It depends on the printer.
