Re: [Brackish] Anyone offering composite album pages? [In reply to] Can't Post

You can get software that does it all automatically (Gary Fong does 1) or you can buy templates from big names for 100s of dollars (Yervant or Buissink) or you can make your own in PS. Smartshooter has a tutorial on making templates but it is easy enough. Beware that there are some reports that books made this way are starting to show up with damaged/scratched prints after as little as 2 years light use.

Is the damage due to the printing process, the printing quality, or the style? I would think that the method of printing would have a lot to do with it. Some companies offer a lustre type of coating on the print to keep it from getting damaged, but I haven't done any like that yet.

Re: [Brackish] Anyone offering composite album pages? [In reply to] Can't Post

I've seen this used for engagement photos as well as for events such as anniversary parties, business events, etc. The prints were made poster size. I think it is a neat idea. I'd like to do one of my own family.

I would think it would be fairly easy to do in something like Illustrator. For smaller things I've actually used power point and had it work very well (I'm sure all the mac-designy people are cringing right about now).

possibly a combination of things - no varnish, paper to paper contact, binding process? I think some of the new style books don't have the protection that old fashioned mounting with dividers gave. At least the slip ins have at least a mat to keep the image off the next page. There is a thread on ourppa that even mentions some books getting tacky enough for the pages to stick together in hot conditions.

can't find it on his website. The whole site is dying - looks like the Fong magic has worn off. There are plenty of templates floating around though. I think the album sites have a few of their own. It isn't hard to find a layout on a photog site to get some ideas from either.

Like this:

http://www.pbase.com/s1procam/composites

Is this popular?

What is the basic workflow to get these done? Is it

like a template that is used?

I just use Photoshop to do them. Just say you are making a 10x10 book. The open page size would be 10x20. So for page spread 1, I choose the pic I want as the background, and crop it to be 10x20 at 300 dpi. Add whatever effects and filters you want, such as black and white, blur, glow whatever and the background is done. Then choose the pics for the page. You want a 4x6 next? Choose your pic, set the crop tool to 4x6 and poof--the first picture is done. Each pic is on its own layer and can be moved separately to wherever you want on the page. You just keep building with layers.

Ah! You think I'll learn your secret identity Wink. It is worth it for the level of info you can read. You better hurry though because it is on the way to becoming closed to non-members.

Thanks, Julie. So how does it get from that point to being in a book?

It depends on the company. With Classic Albums, you can send them the digital files or have the prints made yourself and they just do the binding. They do virtually any size you want, so I make each page spread 2 standard pics. The last book I did was and 11x14. I designed the page spread as an 22x14 and cut the pic in half and had them printed. This way if I didn't like a print, I could fix it and redo it before it it became part of the book.
