Re: [Brackish] Anyone using slave flash for events? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm a big believer in off-camera lighting. I bought a set of 3 radio transmitters that I am still practicing with. 2 or 3 point lighting is one of those things that separates me from all the guests with cameras and makes me worth my money.

Re: [Brackish] Anyone using slave flash for events? [In reply to] Can't Post

It is probably just my latest fad but in a few situations tied to formal shots or special album poses I will drag out my flashes. I use a mix of older flashes in different sizes but they are all small and even with the receivers on, they are small enough to fit on superclamps or bungee somewhere. I want my kit to be light and quick to set up. If I get quick enough, I want to standardise on a 2 flash setup with one attached off the camera and one on some sort of fitting, maybe a tripod, to place to one side.

That's pretty good for slave wages! I just pay mine in Timmies certificates.

I've seen this used a couple of times too.

One event was really dark and the photog set up a slave flash off to the side of where he was standing and used it during the entrances. I had wondered if he was aiming at elminating shadows and making sure that both of their faces received light.

I have also seen a simple/small unbrella placed off to the side of the head table and the photog using that during the dinner to get shots of the couple.

The w/s would have to be kept in mind for buying a unit for that sized space. The one I am looking at is 400w/s.

alienbees.com is getting some good press for their off camera lighting. For the few extra bucks it costs, people say to go with the 800 cause you can always make an 800 act like a 400, but you cannot make a 400 act like an 800. Plus, they come in cute colors! The 580 flash will trigger then without a transmitter, but they do sell a transmitter/receiver if you don't want everyone's flash setting them off.

Re: [Shadow] Anyone using slave flash for events? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm editing a wedding now, where there were 3 photogs shooting for the pre-ceremony, ceremony, and the entire reception. For the pre/post formals, they brought a whole truckload of studio lighting gear. For the reception, they used two strobes on stands, dragging them around as needed.

Problem was, all three of them were sharing the radio frequency of the flashs' wireless, 3 photogs X 2 flashpoles + on camera flashes....I was nearly blind by the end of the night.Laugh

It was funny...all of their flashpoles were sitting in the church while the guests were being seated, and the photogs were off shooting the B&G in other places. But their wireless' were still triggering the flashes constantly...annoying everyone, and driving the church Nazi lady mad with confusion. Laugh

Here's what they used during the reception:

Of course, on the other side of the stage, I was using a light stand as well...with an e604 attached....

You can see everyone in the picture is admiring how cool it is.
