Re: [Brackish] New Canon 580EX II flash [In reply to] Can't Post

The 580EX recycles well enough... and remember that it will fire with a partial recycle too.

I don't really notice a delay when batteries/power-pack are fresh.

I wouldn't dump my current flashes for the II, but I look forward to getting one eventually.

The EX cycles pretty quickly. The sound? Well, it makes that same sound that every sci-fi show uses for charging a ray gun, a power suit, a HUD display, or any other electronic gadget that makes a "charging" sound. I only notice it when I first turn the flash on, though, not inbetween shots, but that may be because of my attention being directed towards a shot instead of a power switch.

Recycle time depends on how the flash fired. When it ETTL mode, it sends out enough flash to light the shot. At full power, recycle time is longer. I heard somewhere 6 seconds at full power. When the bridesmaids run down the aisle, you need your flash ready all the time. During the cake, you need the flash ready all the time. I have an external battery pack for my flash. It holds 8 AA batteries and the flash is ready in an instant. You still use the 4AA's in the flash so you are firing with 12 AA's instead of 4.

Hi, Julie.

What is that? I've never seen that before. It's basically just a battery holder?

How does that differ from something like this?:

It just holds 8 extra AA's and connects with a cord to the 580. It weighs 5.5 ounces versus 2.5 pounds for the Quantum pack. It can be threaded through a belt so you never need to carry it on your shoulder or stuck in a pocket. With the case, it is about 7.5 inches by 3" by 1". I use rechargable AA"s so if they die, I can just throw in a new set. The Quantum takes 4 hours to recharge if it dies.
