Re: [Brackish] Recommended CF cards? Brands to avoid? [In reply to] Can't Post

I only have the Sandisk Ultra II, they seem very reliable to me.
I'd be interested to hear what others have to say about brands.

I wonder if slower write speed and reliability have to do with the cheaper costs.

I've got a couple of 1gig PNY CF cards and haven't had any problems, but if/when I do a large, paying gig, I'll pick up a few Sandisk Ultra 2s. They're so cheap now anyway.

Just don't procure them from eBay Jordan. Not that I need eBay to tell me this, but they warn that 95% of Sandisk cards flogged on their website are counterfeit. Those are eBay's words, not mine.

yeah, I ment from the major retailers- the price has come down considerably.

Got my first 4mb Extreme III off ebay Jan.06, but told them before doing 'buy now' that if it was a fake I'd personally drive down there and embed it in their forehead Laugh

haha, now thats what I call "bidding with confidence" Cool

Hi, Jordan.

There seems to be a number of different types of Sandisks that it makes it
hard to choose which to go with. Any reason you mentioned the Ultra 2s?
I could be/probably am completely wrong, but thats what I read (over on fredmiranda.com) that most use.

I got some 2 GB Extreme IIIs at CompUSA a few weeks ago for $49 each.

I only buy the Sandisk Extreme. It is supposedly built to withstand harsher conditions and temperatures. I also only buy 1 and 2 gig sizes as I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket either by having a huge size and all the pictures on it. I bought one of those little CF card carriers as well where they snap into place and I can close them up when I've used up one.

B&H has the 1 gig extreme for $46.95 right now with a $10 rebate although the rebate expires tomorrow (2/28).

SanDisk. And they even have their own recovery software in case of an accidental erasing or corrupted data.

I have the SanDisk "ImageMate 12 in 1". It will accomodate 12 types of chips.
Just make sure the chips go in straight or they just won't plug in. Has its own little stand with a usb cable or you can use it with a usb cable and no stand.

It came as a mini cd with the chips. But it's probably also downloadable from their web site. I have heard that the sw will actually work with other manufactures chips too.

Be careful Jordan also using large cap. cards with your 10d. I bought a 4 gig card and it is almost unusable because it takes so long to write to the card. Sometimes it is a 20-30 second delay.

The capacity of the card shouldn't affect write times, should it? Seems like the card should write about as fast as your camera can shoot...with the camera being the bottleneck. But like I say...I don't own a DSLR...just a CF card. Tongue

The card I have is a Ridata 4gb, 150x speed. It is very very slow. On the other hand I have 2 512 Sandisk cards (80x write speed) and a 1 gig Sandisk card. They work without a problem. Perhaps it is the brand? This is the Ridata card:

I like that Leica still makes an old-school leather fitted case for their super-expensive D-LUX 3 point & shoot. I thought it'd be cool to have a functional, padded, new-manufacture vintage "look" real leather camera shoulder bag. One just big enough to hold an extra lens and the flash. I'm sure there's one out there that I can't afford. Laugh

Just the little Leica case is $85. (I wouldn't mind having the D-LUX 3 as well for my vacation pics, but it's $600!)
