Re: [Brackish] CF card strategy? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have four 4MB cards, two for each body. With RAW compression on I get about 400 files per card. That's about how many pictures I take so I have another one just in case I shoot more, and also for redundancy.

I've also read that a lot of people prefer to use smaller cards, so that they won't lose as much if one card gets zapped somehow. I don't have any experience in shooting zillions of digital wedding photos, but I'd think you'd be far more likely to actually LOSE entire cards by using a bunch of small ones, than having a freak glitch erase all the pictures on one large card, that couldn't be rescued using recovery software.

I guess if you're going to carry a bunch of 1GB cards, you'd just want to make sure and carry them in a very safe place, and clearly number them...just like MiniDV tapes. Of course, we've read the stories here, about videographers managing to lose MiniDV tapes as well! Shocked

Re: [Brackish] CF card strategy? [In reply to] Can't Post

I get very different results downloading depending on the card reader, system, etc. For example, my laptop can download 200 megs in under a minute if it is plugged directly in, but through a cable/card reader on the same port it may take 20 minutes. It might sound like it is the cable, but I am using the same cable that I use for my external hard drives. So, it might be the card reader.

Also, my portable hard drive can transfer 4 gigs in under 5 minutes connected to my PC, but connected to my laptop I still get flakey time-outs after about 5 minutes of transfer, and the same amount of data says it will take 90 minutes. Both have USB 2, both use the same physical hardware (outside of the box...in other words, same USB cable, same hard drive, etc.) but it pulls from a USB thumb drive really fast - so I don't know what the inconsistency is unless it is some driver issue.

In other words, your mileage may vary, but a 2 gig card can be pulled to my computer in under 7 minutes. I just plug it in, go watch a show, and it is done by the next commercial break. If you don't have any flakey hardware issues I would say you could probably transfer 4 gigs in 8-10 minutes.

I have thought of this too. I have 4 1 gig cards and will be buying some more 2 gig cards. I have mine numbered with my phone number on there as well, just in case one goes missing.

I have a card holder that will fit into my waist pack. I find that better than a bunch of loose cards that I'm digging for in my pack.

Happy shopping!!

The Pocket Rocket loops around my belt and clips to its self. ALL cards are in my pocket from the time I leave home till the time I return. Should it somehow fall out of my pocket ... it's attached to my belt.

I have the LowePro DMC-Z , but I never used it. I only have one CF card...a Sandisk Extreme III 4GB...but no camera to put it in. Laugh My digital camera uses floppy discs. The DMC-Z will hold 6 CF Cards, and 4 AA batteries or a PC card adapter. Cost $10 at BH. It has a belt loop so you can't lose it..if you wear a belt.

Now that you're professional I'd highly recommend you spend the few extra bucks on the Extreme III line. There's a reason they're more expensive. Not just faster, they're more robust. The Ultra2 line is a much less robust consumer-grade product, plus they're slower.

I use the SanDisk 2gb chips and I have their recovery software. Although I've never needed to recover something myself I did do a recovery job for someone who accidently erased part of a wedding.
I get 216 raw images on it or 548 jpegs but I shoot all main events raw now.
3, 2gb chips should do it for a wedding. There's no reason to go berserk with thousands of images. Besides, the bride goes numb going through all of that stuff and who has the time to edit a thousand images?

Re: [Brackish] CF card strategy? [In reply to] Can't Post

The last job there were 330 images, a lower number because there was no house, I started at the church. But I have been in the 400-500 range. When I was doing the 2nd shooter thing last year one time we shot 756 images and it is NOT fun to edit all that stuff. Takes waaaay too long.
Chips I currently own are 3, 2gb Ultra ll's, 1 512mb Ultra ll, 1, regular 512mb, and 1, 1gb regular. When I say regular I mean their 1st generation chip. I also put patches of bright orange florescent tape on them along with my phone number. Easy to see if it ends up on the floor and a phone number for an honest person to use.
