None of my photogs use one but I recently filmed a wedding in the UK where there was one of the top UK photogs (who is essentially a fashion photographer) and he had a monopod attached to his camera for most of the day, but rarely had it extended ! But I guess that the way he hugged the camera and monopod must have made for very stable pictures; just looked funny Crazy

I think I might get one to try it and see whether it is worth it, but I am not convinced. Most of my long shots where it could be an advantage I take with a stabilised lens so they are already very sharp. My wide to medium zoom is not stabilised so perhaps at the long end it could improve sharpness.
