09.16.2006 Images Can't Post

Some photos from September 16th, my last photo & video shoot EVER. I just can't do both and do 100% justice to either. I am worrying too much about the video and miss a great photo oppurtunity, or I am not paying attention to the video becuase I am trying to take a photo etc etc. I have hired staff to help out, but I just can't seem to give up full control of the video.
Anyways on to the photos, more are on my blog as usual at http://www.digitaliso.ca/blog

Toogy, those look fabulous...I like the one on the hill slope...

When you say the last, are you saying the last combo-package? Is it just either-or now?

Ugh! Complete abandonment!!! TRAITOR! Cool

What are you going to do with all of your video gear you piled up? Is the switch simply for practical (monetary) reasons?

Well I still do some corporate video stuff.. So my plan is to sell most of my stuff (PD170, VX2100, TRV900) and put that towards one of the new Canon HDV camcorders.
I don't need three cameras to shoot corporate stuff.

As far as getting out of wedding videos, nobody was willing to pay me what I felt it was worth. Why would I bust my ass for 8+ hours and get paid less than I do to photograph a wedding for 4 hours. Not to mention the post production being SO much easier for photography.

Jeff,
Glad to see that you consistenly deliver "same" quality stuff. I'm not talking about the artistic aspect since your images tend to be different (which is a plus). But outside of the content your images are always top quality. Great work man.

As usual Jeff, great pictures. What are you using to show your proofs to the clients? I know you were testing a few different hosting options. by the way, how do you do the blog thing on you site? Is it just onw page that keeps going?

thanks for sharing your stuff. I will post a few of my own now. I would love to get some feedback from you.

I'm using Photoshop CS2 to create a web gallery for my proofs and then I upload it to my site for my clients to view.
I do offer a printed 4x6 print album, but only about half my customers take that option.
I downloaded and installed wordpress on my server for my blog. It's free and pretty easy to use.

Jeff how does that work? I've just switched over to CS2 and have yet to play with it. Can you give me a walk through? Great images as always. I'm debating switching completely over to Photo too as there is just so much more money there in my eye's and less back end work.

In CS2, under file > automate > web photo gallery. Then select a folder of images, give it the details it asks for and bam, it creates all the HTML code in a different folder that you just upload to your webserver.

Hey Jeff ... on #4, did you use a reflector on that shot?

Out of video ... lucky dog. I have one wedding to edit (video) and then that should be it. Depending on the client I would entertain doing another wedding video, but it will have to be the right coverage at the right price. If I do any major two or three camera weddings then I'll be back on VU looking for someone to edit it for me. As a matter of fact I should probably get some figures from the members on what they would charge so that I would know how to set my pricing.

As far as video goes, I have the phone company, hospital, two dance studios, high school and show choir camp at the universtiy that I'm still going to maintain a relationship with. ESPECIALLY the phone company. Great money there. Otherwise ... not mentioned in the phone book and nothing on my website about video.

I had to think twice today before I answered the question on the phone "Is that the video man?"
You see, that has a lot of the problems right there- when they phone for photos, they always know the studio name and talk to me as a professional. If I didn't have a couple of personal archival projects to do this year, I would be tempted to sell all my video gear right now.

It's kinda like being that 35 year old "slow" guy at the market that bags your groceries and collects shopping carts. No matter how old they are, people still call them the "sacker boy". Laugh

It's why most weddings are videotaped by a friend or relative..if it were considered a real skill, they'd actually pay someone to do it. And when they do pay someone, they don't want to pay top dollar for skill, they're basically paying someone to videotape for no other reason than to make sure it gets done without having to depend on their uncle.Crazy

If they want video, the price comes up in the first two sentences. For photo, they spend 5 minutes going through the options, before they think about price. Like Rusty has said, the photo sale is already made in their minds, while we still have to convince them that video is worth considering.

I think that's a very true statement. People know that they want a photographer when they call. A video of their day is an option. To some ... an extremely important option, but those people are in the minority.

I'm having a very hard time with the phone right now. When they call and ask me if I'm available for their wedding day I have to ask or find a way of saying ... yes, I'm available to photograph your wedding on that day. I don't want to fumble around and ask if they mean photo or video. That way if they say no ... video, then at least I know where we stand.
