1DmkIII's Live Preview Feature! Can't Post

The 1DmkIII looks absolutely incredible. 10 mega-pixels, 10 fps, 3" LCD, auto-sensor cleaning, and a new "live preview mode" where you can use the LCD to frame your shots like a point n' shoot. I personally find this option to be very appealing! It's easier to do creative compositions without ising an "anglefinder" attachement.

Anyone want a lightly used *mint* 5D? Angelic

Isn't this camera like $3500? For that much, I'm surprised they went through all the trouble to include LiveView and a dust shaker like the Olympus 330, but made the LCD fixed?? Seems like that would take all the usefullness out of LiveView?

Olympus e-330 is only $700, but probably no comparison for the high ISO capability of the Canon for low light shots. It will be interesting to see what they come out with at PMA, if anything...I want to buy a new camera!! Cool

Glen, for THAT much money, you could get yourself a REAL camera that won't be obsolete in 6 months after they release a replacement model:

No comparison in ISO?...Heck no comparison in ANYTHING. Comparing that cam to a 1-series pro DSLR is like comparing a Dodge Omni to a Dodge Viper GTS. Cool

The rotating LCD is a nice touch. If the off-viewing angle of the fixed LCD is good it shouldn't be too bad.

Film camera? Bleh! No thanks. Sly

I've been watching all the discussions on DWF very closely. This camera (unless there is banding and other stuff we don't know about going on) is going to in high demand. Not high as in how popular the 30D was, but with the pros ... they want it. Some can't part with their money yet, but it will be on their wish list.

I have two 20D bodies right now. I was hoping Canon would provide a slight upgrade on the 5D or 30D ... not because I wanted one ... but I want a used body at a steal.

If I could hold out for the camera to come out I'm sure the market will start flooding with some used 5Ds, but I'm not sure I can wait that long. More than likely a used 30D is in the works for me.

I thought the photogs' heads were going to explode - this is like their new PlayStation came out!

I was hoping for an upgrade to the 5D b/c we do want one, and I figured, if I'm gonna drop the bucks, I might as well get the newest model. I was watching Fred Miranda for a used 5D, but that's kind of a waste of time b/c chances of finding one is slim... or was.

My understanding is that the Mark III is overkill for weddings, though I do dig the 3" LCD. From what I read - I would prefer a 5D FF. I reaaaaally want one w/ a nice fisheye. sigh.

ahhh, good point. basta'ds - always leaving the door open for yet another new model. Or rather, some would say, very smart.

Unless someone is shooting for some REALLY high end customers and rolling in the cash, it would seem it's a HUGE amount of money to pay for a 10mp DSLR, judging by the price of the previous model. Maybe there's something I'm missing in the specs, or I'm looking at the wrong previous model. If a photog has that much of a body for a DSLR body, you'd think a digital "medium format" camera would be a possibility. I'd hate to buy a camera that would require me to shoot 30 weddings in order to pay for it, at which time it would be once again obsolete. (Then again, as a wedding videographer, I'm not one to talk when it comes to buying toys that your business can't pay for.Laugh)

I'd spend the money on that lens you really want. Who cares what body it is attached to! Lenses are the fun stuff...and while expensive, won't be obsolete in a few months.

My next DSLR will be $440. And when I get a real day job to pay for it, my next "big" purchase will be a nice $2200 lens to put on it....

Glass is a good investment. Many pieces actually go up in value. Bodies, heck, almost any decent body will do and they're not really an investment as much as a disposable tool. A D200 @ $1300 brand new usa model is the body to own these days, imo (if one already owns Nikkor glass, particularily). Could own 3 of them for the price of that Canon and still have change left over, and all that really matters is who is releasing the shutter not the body. I sold a D2X because I knew just as nice pictures could be made with a D200...and got two of them with money left over. Even a D50 would do just fine. It's the lenses that matter most.

My understanding is that the Mark III is overkill for weddings,

At the last two weddings that I did, the photographers were using a 10D and a couple of Digital Rebels respectively. Sometimes I think that there is an inverse relationship between the personality of the photographer and price of his/her equipment. These two photographers were really nice guys. The last person I worked with who had a 1D was a total A**hole. I know that is a generalization, as I worked with a photographer a few months ago who came in with two (Nikon) D2Hs, a D2X, and a D70 (along with lots of pro glass) who was very nice. But then again, she worked for the local paper during the week and perhaps the cameras were borrowed.

Re: [Brackish] 1DmkIII's Live Preview Feature! [In reply to] Can't Post

I hear ya. Keep in mind though there are two different 'styles' of wedding photography. There's 'traditional' which involves mostly posed, created photographs and then there's photojournalist where none at all are posed. The latter is a completely valid style (and also more difficult imo) which also requires many more images be shot. But no 'firehosing' in either case. Firehosers are posers, and I'm not talking about the subjectsLaugh. Firehosing is quite valid for action photography, however (eg. sports). That's also where Canon cameras take a slight edge, too (i.e. high speed autofocus primary, artwork secondary or even nonexistant)

I don't like using the word 'style' to describe these two types of wedding photography because it gets confused with the photog's 'style' all the time. I can and will do either for a bride, but many experts have said doing both won't let you develop your own style. I disagree. My 'style' is the exact same in both and was developed years before I ever shot a wedding. A photog's style, in my opinion, is mostly in their frame composition, not whether pictures are posed or not. Composition skills/styles don't change between the two types of shooting...at least they shouldn't.

I would concur with your assessment. To be honest, as a videographer, this camera - the Mark III - makes me cringe. As if they weren't psycho before, snap happy and jumping all over the place, it will only get worse.

I like that it's full frame and in some of the larger cathedrals in our area, with a nice wide angle or fisheye on there, it would look rather sweeeeet. Right now, with the crop factor - I lose a little off the top or I have to compromise the composition to fit the entire altar in the frame.

Also, from what I understand, with low light and higher ISOs, there are fewer artifacts on enlargements - so you can go quite large and keep a clean, crisp image. So it's not just the megapixels that can make a difference. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's how interpretted what I read.

Yeah, they keep teasing people with that sort of stuff. The mysterious picture gives the impression of updated versions of the consumer e-400 and e-500 models on March 5, but nothing but a faint silhouette of what they want us to think is a new pro E-1 model...with no release date on it. It's really going to have to be something very impressive to compete with the new 1D, especially after this long without a new model. In addition to Olympus innovations like the dust shaker and Live View, plus the weather sealing of the current E-1, they're really going to need to pack a lot of megapixels into it, which should be interesting considering the small sensor size specified in the Fourthirds standard. The only thing Olympus has officially said, is that it would be released sometime this year.

They apparently showed some phony mock-ups at Photokina 2006, yet still no new E-1, while Canon & Nikon are cranking out new models all the time. Very suspicious. Crazy

Just heard that AF is disabled in the live preview mode.
Don't know if this matters to you or not.

Supposed to start shipping in the next week or two. I see B&H lists it at $4500.

Maybe don't be so quick to sell the 5D. Reports coming
out from new users of the new cam are that most
or all have trouble with AF! Many folks are canceling
their pre-orders or trying to sell the cam they have
on ebay.

Looks like it's a glitch that Canon didn't know about and
I guess, so far, has not acknowledged as a problem.

Don't know the details but one of the issues is that
AF is very poor in bright lighting if the camera is warm.
I saw where one guy posted his outdoor wedding shots
and the mis-focuses were pretty bad. One owner
exclaimed "$4500 for a manual focus camera".

New Canon selling at $5000 at Newegg

http://www.newegg.com/...Item=N82E16830120203

A bit more on the AF problems. Most are suspecting it's a hardware

problem - not fixable with a firmware update - that is essentially

a design flaw. Canon has significantly slowed down production/release

of the cam.
